Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(6) Amen, the Lord do so.--It is impossible to mistake the tone of keen, incisive irony with which the words were spoken. The speaker could, without falsehood, echo the wish as far as it was a wish, but he knew that it was a wish for the impossible. The whole condition of things would have to be altered before there could be the slightest prospect of its fulfilment. It was not wise to pray for that which was obviously out of the lines of God's normal methods of working in history, and against His purpose, as uttered by His prophets.Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrew“Amen!”אָמֵ֕ן (’ā·mên)AdverbStrong's 543: Sure, faithfulness, trulyJeremiahיִרְמְיָ֣ה (yir·mə·yāh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3414: Jeremiah -- 'Yah loosens', the name of a number of Israelitessaid.וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (way·yō·mer)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 559: To utter, say“May the LORDיְהוָ֑ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3069: YHWHdoיַעֲשֶׂ֣ה (ya·‘ă·śeh)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 6213: To do, makeso!כֵּ֖ן (kên)AdverbStrong's 3651: So -- thusMay the LORDיְהוָה֙ (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3069: YHWHfulfillיָקֵ֤ם (yā·qêm)Verb - Hifil - Imperfect Jussive - third person masculine singularStrong's 6965: To arise, stand up, standthe wordsדְּבָרֶ֔יךָ (də·ḇā·re·ḵā)Noun - masculine plural construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 1697: A word, a matter, thing, a causeyou have prophesied,נִבֵּ֗אתָ (nib·bê·ṯā)Verb - Nifal - Perfect - second person masculine singularStrong's 5012: To prophesy, speak, by inspirationand may He restoreלְהָשִׁ֞יב (lə·hā·šîḇ)Preposition-l | Verb - Hifil - Infinitive constructStrong's 7725: To turn back, in, to retreat, againthe articlesכְּלֵ֤י (kə·lê)Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 3627: Something prepared, any apparatusof [His]יְהוָה֙ (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3069: YHWHhouseבֵית־ (ḇêṯ-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1004: A houseand allוְכָל־ (wə·ḵāl)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everythe exilesהַגּוֹלָ֔ה (hag·gō·w·lāh)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 1473: Exile, exilesbackאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, toto thisהַזֶּֽה׃ (haz·zeh)Article | Pronoun - masculine singularStrong's 2088: This, thatplaceהַמָּק֥וֹם (ham·mā·qō·wm)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4725: A standing, a spot, a conditionfrom Babylon.מִבָּבֶ֖ל (mib·bā·ḇel)Preposition-m | Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 894: Babylon -- an eastern Mediterranean empire and its capital cityJump to PreviousAmen Babylon Captive Captivity Carried Confirm Exiles House Jeremiah LORD's Perform Prophesied Prophet Vessels Words
