Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(3) I will bring again the captivity of my people Israel and Judah . . .--The oracle of Jeremiah 29:10-14 becomes, as it were, the text of a new utterance, and that with a wider range more distinctly including the ten tribes of Israel as well as the two of Judah and Benjamin. There is no narrow provincialism in the prophet's heart. He yearns for the exiles who are far off on the Euphrates; he yearns also for those who are yet farther in Assyria and the cities of the Medes (2Kings 17:6).Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewForכִּ֠י (kî)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionbehold,הִנֵּ֨ה (hin·nêh)InterjectionStrong's 2009: Lo! behold!the daysיָמִ֤ים (yā·mîm)Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 3117: A dayare coming,בָּאִים֙ (bā·’îm)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine pluralStrong's 935: To come in, come, go in, godeclaresנְאֻם־ (nə·’um-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 5002: An oraclethe LORD,יְהוָ֔ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelwhen I will restoreוְ֠שַׁבְתִּי (wə·šaḇ·tî)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - first person common singularStrong's 7725: To turn back, in, to retreat, againfrom captivityשְׁב֨וּת (šə·ḇūṯ)Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 7622: Exile, prisoners, a former state of prosperityMy peopleעַמִּ֧י (‘am·mî)Noun - masculine singular construct | first person common singularStrong's 5971: A people, a tribe, troops, attendants, a flockIsraelיִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (yiś·rā·’êl)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3478: Israel -- 'God strives', another name of Jacob and his descand Judah,וִֽיהוּדָ֖ה (wî·hū·ḏāh)Conjunctive waw | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3063: Judah -- 'praised', a son of Jacob, also the southern kingdom, also four Israelitesdeclaresאָמַ֣ר (’ā·mar)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 559: To utter, saythe LORD.יְהוָ֑ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of IsraelI will restore themוַהֲשִׁבֹתִ֗ים (wa·hă·ši·ḇō·ṯîm)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Conjunctive perfect - first person common singular | third person masculine pluralStrong's 7725: To turn back, in, to retreat, againtoאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, tothe landהָאָ֛רֶץ (hā·’ā·reṣ)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 776: Earth, landI gaveנָתַ֥תִּי (nā·ṯat·tî)Verb - Qal - Perfect - first person common singularStrong's 5414: To give, put, setto their forefathers,לַאֲבוֹתָ֖ם (la·’ă·ḇō·w·ṯām)Preposition-l | Noun - masculine plural construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 1: Fatherand they will possess it.’”וִֽירֵשֽׁוּהָ׃ (wî·rê·šū·hā)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person common plural | third person feminine singularStrong's 3423: To occupy, to seize, to rob, to inherit, to expel, to impoverish, to ruinJump to PreviousAffirmation Captivity Cause Caused Changed Declares Fathers Forefathers Fortunes Heritage Israel Judah Possess Restore Turn Turned
