Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(13) Will ye not receive instruction . . .--The argument of the prophet is naturally an a fortiori one. The words of Jonadab had been kept faithfully as a rule of life for 300 years by his descendants or his order. The words of Jehovah, "rising early and speaking" through His prophets (we note the repetition of the characteristic phrase of Jeremiah 7:13; Jeremiah 25:3), were neglected by the people whom He had adopted as His children. They, too, had the same promise that by obeying they should dwell in the land which He had given them, but they had turned a deaf ear both to the promise and the warning which it implied.Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrew“This is whatכֹּֽה־ (kōh-)AdverbStrong's 3541: Like this, thus, here, nowthe LORDיְהוָ֤ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3069: YHWHof Hosts,צְבָאוֹת֙ (ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ)Noun - common pluralStrong's 6635: A mass of persons, reg, organized for, war, a campaignthe Godאֱלֹהֵ֣י (’ĕ·lō·hê)Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 430: gods -- the supreme God, magistrates, a superlativeof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (yiś·rā·’êl)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3478: Israel -- 'God strives', another name of Jacob and his descsays:אָמַ֞ר (’ā·mar)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 559: To utter, sayGoהָלֹ֤ךְ (hā·lōḵ)Verb - Qal - Infinitive absoluteStrong's 1980: To go, come, walkand tellוְאָֽמַרְתָּ֙ (wə·’ā·mar·tā)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - second person masculine singularStrong's 559: To utter, saythe menלְאִ֣ישׁ (lə·’îš)Preposition-l | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 376: A man as an individual, a male personof Judahיְהוּדָ֔ה (yə·hū·ḏāh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3063: Judah -- 'praised', a son of Jacob, also the southern kingdom, also four Israelitesand residentsוּלְיֽוֹשְׁבֵ֖י (ū·lə·yō·wō·šə·ḇê)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine plural constructStrong's 3427: To sit down, to dwell, to remain, to settle, to marryof Jerusalem:יְרֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (yə·rū·šā·lim)Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 3389: Jerusalem -- probably 'foundation of peace', capital city of all Israel‘Will you notהֲל֨וֹא (hă·lō·w)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, noacceptתִקְח֥וּ (ṯiq·ḥū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 3947: To takedisciplineמוּסָ֛ר (mū·sār)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4148: Chastisement, reproof, warning, instruction, restraintand obeyלִשְׁמֹ֥עַ (liš·mō·a‘)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Infinitive constructStrong's 8085: To hear intelligentlyMy words?’דְּבָרַ֖י (də·ḇā·ray)Noun - masculine plural construct | first person common singularStrong's 1697: A word, a matter, thing, a causedeclaresנְאֻם־ (nə·’um-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 5002: An oraclethe LORD.יְהוָֽה׃ (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3069: YHWHJump to PreviousAffirmation Almighty Armies Declares Ear Hearken Hope Hosts Inhabitants Instruction Israel Jerusalem Judah Listening Receive Teaching Words
