Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(7) Behold, Pharaoh's army, which is come forth to help you, shall return to Egypt.--A like prediction as to the fate of the Egyptian army is found in Ezekiel 17:17, and is there connected with the fact that Zedekiah's application to Egypt was a distinct breach of the compact which he had made with the Chaldaeans. Their arrival, like that of Tirhakah in the Assyrian invasion (2Kings 19:9; Isaiah 37:9), caused only a temporary suspension of hostilities, and led finally to the conquest and subjugation of Egypt by Nebuchadnezzar.Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrew“This is whatכֹּֽה־ (kōh-)AdverbStrong's 3541: Like this, thus, here, nowthe LORD,יְהוָה֙ (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelthe Godאֱלֹהֵ֣י (’ĕ·lō·hê)Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 430: gods -- the supreme God, magistrates, a superlativeof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (yiś·rā·’êl)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3478: Israel -- 'God strives', another name of Jacob and his descsays:אָמַ֤ר (’ā·mar)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 559: To utter, sayTellתֹֽאמְרוּ֙ (ṯō·mə·rū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 559: To utter, saythe kingמֶ֣לֶךְ (me·leḵ)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 4428: A kingof Judah,יְהוּדָ֔ה (yə·hū·ḏāh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3063: Judah -- 'praised', a son of Jacob, also the southern kingdom, also four Israeliteswho is sendingהַשֹּׁלֵ֧חַ (haš·šō·lê·aḥ)Article | Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 7971: To send away, for, outyouאֶתְכֶ֛ם (’eṯ·ḵem)Direct object marker | second person masculine pluralStrong's 853: Untranslatable mark of the accusative caseto inquireלְדָרְשֵׁ֑נִי (lə·ḏā·rə·šê·nî)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Infinitive construct | first person common singularStrong's 1875: To tread, frequent, to follow, to seek, ask, to worshipof Me,אֵלַ֖י (’ê·lay)Preposition | first person common singularStrong's 413: Near, with, among, to‘Behold,הִנֵּ֣ה ׀ (hin·nêh)InterjectionStrong's 2009: Lo! behold!Pharaoh’sפַּרְעֹ֗ה (par·‘ōh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 6547: Pharaoh -- a title of Egypt kingsarmy,חֵ֣יל (ḥêl)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 2428: A force, an army, wealth, virtue, valor, strengthwhich has marched outהַיֹּצֵ֤א (hay·yō·ṣê)Article | Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 3318: To go, bring, out, direct and proximto help you,לְעֶזְרָ֔ה (lə·‘ez·rāh)Preposition-l | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 5833: Help, helper, assistanceis going backשָׁ֥ב (šāḇ)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 7725: To turn back, in, to retreat, againto its own landלְאַרְצ֖וֹ (lə·’ar·ṣōw)Preposition-l | Noun - feminine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 776: Earth, landof Egypt.מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (miṣ·rā·yim)Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 4714: Egypt -- a son of Ham, also his descendants and their country in Northwest AfricaJump to PreviousArmy Egypt Enquire Forth Help Inquire Israel Judah Pharaoh's
