Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English ReadersXXXIX.(1) In the ninth year of Zedekiah . . .--The great crisis came at last, as Jeremiah had long ago predicted. A fuller narrative of the siege and capture is given in Jeremiah 52. The two verses which open the chapter seem to have been inserted here by the editor of the prophecies in their present form, as explaining the fact with which Jeremiah 38 had closed. The siege had lasted eighteen months, beginning in B.C. 590 and ending B.C. 588. It came to an end, as we learn from Jeremiah 52:6, through the pressure of the famine, of which we have seen traces in Jeremiah 37:21.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewIn the ninthהַ֠תְּשִׁעִית (hat·tə·ši·‘îṯ)Article | Number - ordinal feminine singularStrong's 8671: Ninth (an ordinal number)yearבַּשָּׁנָ֣ה (baš·šā·nāh)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 8141: A yearof Zedekiahלְצִדְקִיָּ֨הוּ (lə·ṣiḏ·qî·yā·hū)Preposition-l | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 6667: Zedekiah -- 'Yah is righteousness', six Israeliteskingמֶלֶךְ־ (me·leḵ-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 4428: A kingof Judah,יְהוּדָ֜ה (yə·hū·ḏāh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3063: Judah -- 'praised', a son of Jacob, also the southern kingdom, also four Israelitesin the tenthהָעֲשִׂרִ֗י (hā·‘ă·śi·rî)Article | Number - ordinal masculine singularStrong's 6224: Tenth, tenth month, partmonth,בַּחֹ֣דֶשׁ (ba·ḥō·ḏeš)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 2320: The new moon, a monthKingמֶֽלֶךְ־ (me·leḵ-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 4428: A kingNebuchadnezzarנְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּ֨ר (nə·ḇū·ḵaḏ·reṣ·ṣar)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 5019: Nebuchadnezzar -- 'Nebo, protect the boundary', a Babylonian kingof Babylonבָּבֶ֤ל (bā·ḇel)Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 894: Babylon -- an eastern Mediterranean empire and its capital cityadvancedבָּ֠א (bā)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 935: To come in, come, go in, goagainstאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, toJerusalemיְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם (yə·rū·šā·lim)Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 3389: Jerusalem -- probably 'foundation of peace', capital city of all Israelwith his entireוְכָל־ (wə·ḵāl)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyarmyחֵילוֹ֙ (ḥê·lōw)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 2428: A force, an army, wealth, virtue, valor, strengthand laid siegeוַיָּצֻ֖רוּ (way·yā·ṣu·rū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 6696: To confine, bind, besiegeto [the city].עָלֶֽיהָ׃ (‘ā·le·hā)Preposition | third person feminine singularStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstJump to PreviousArmy Babylon Besieged Captured Force It Jerusalem Judah Laid Marched Month Nebuchadnezzar Nebuchadrezzar Nebuchadrez'zar Ninth Shutting Side Siege Tenth Whole Zedekiah Zedeki'ah
