Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(39) In their heat I will make their feasts . . .--The words are stern and bitter in their irony. When the revellers are hot with wine and lust (comp. Hosea 7:4-7) Jehovah would call them to a banquet of another kind. The wine cup which He would give them would be that of His wrath (Jeremiah 25:16-17), and their drunken joy should end in an eternal sleep. So Herodotus (i. 191) narrates that when Cyrus took the city by his stratagem the inhabitants were keeping a feast with their wonted revelry and license. (Compare Xenoph. Cyrop?d. vii. 23.)Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewWhile they are flushed with heat,בְּחֻמָּ֞ם (bə·ḥum·mām)Preposition-b | Verb - Qal - Infinitive construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 2527: HeatI will serveאָשִׁ֣ית (’ā·šîṯ)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - first person common singularStrong's 7896: To put, setthem a feast,מִשְׁתֵּיהֶ֗ם (miš·tê·hem)Noun - masculine plural construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 4960: Drink, drinking, a banquet, feastand I will make them drunkוְהִשְׁכַּרְתִּים֙ (wə·hiš·kar·tîm)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Conjunctive perfect - first person common singular | third person masculine pluralStrong's 7937: To become tipsy, to satiate with a, stimulating drink, influenceso thatלְמַ֣עַן (lə·ma·‘an)ConjunctionStrong's 4616: Purpose -- intentthey may revel;יַעֲלֹ֔זוּ (ya·‘ă·lō·zū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 5937: To jump for, joy, exultthen they will fall asleepוְיָשְׁנ֥וּ (wə·yā·šə·nū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 3462: To be slack, languid, sleep, to grow old, stale, inveterateforeverעוֹלָ֖ם (‘ō·w·lām)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5769: Concealed, eternity, frequentatively, alwaysand neverוְלֹ֣א (wə·lō)Conjunctive waw | Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, nowake up,יָקִ֑יצוּ (yā·qî·ṣū)Verb - Hifil - Imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 6974: Arise, be awake, watch declaresנְאֻ֖ם (nə·’um)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 5002: An oraclethe LORD.יְהוָֽה׃ (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of IsraelJump to PreviousAroused Awaking Banquet Convulsed Declares Drink Drunk Drunken Eternal Exult Feast Feasts Forever Heat Heated Inflamed Jubilant Laughter Overcome Perpetual Poison Prepare Rejoice Serve Shout Sleep Sleeping Swoon Unconscious Wake
