Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(47) Therefore, behold, the days come . . .--The first word has its full force. The Israelite exiles were to infer from the rumours and disorders of the preceding verse, that the day of vengeance was at hand. The formula, "behold, the days come," was Jeremiah's customary manner of announcing a prediction (comp. Jeremiah 7:32; Jeremiah 16:14, et al.). For "slain" some commentators read "wounded" or "smitten," as the word is rendered in Psalm 69:26; Job 24:12, the words that follow indicating that the wounded shall have no power to escape, but shall fill the city with their corpses.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewTherefore,לָכֵן֙ (lā·ḵên)AdverbStrong's 3651: So -- thusbehold,הִנֵּ֣ה (hin·nêh)InterjectionStrong's 2009: Lo! behold!the daysיָמִ֣ים (yā·mîm)Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 3117: A dayare comingבָּאִ֔ים (bā·’îm)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine pluralStrong's 935: To come in, come, go in, gowhen I will punishוּפָקַדְתִּי֙ (ū·p̄ā·qaḏ·tî)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - first person common singularStrong's 6485: To visit, to oversee, muster, charge, care for, miss, depositthe idolsפְּסִילֵ֣י (pə·sî·lê)Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 6456: An idol, imageof Babylon.בָבֶ֔ל (ḇā·ḇel)Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 894: Babylon -- an eastern Mediterranean empire and its capital cityHer entireוְכָל־ (wə·ḵāl)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everylandאַרְצָ֖הּ (’ar·ṣāh)Noun - feminine singular construct | third person feminine singularStrong's 776: Earth, landwill suffer shame,תֵּב֑וֹשׁ (tê·ḇō·wōš)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 954: To pale, to be ashamed, to be disappointed, delayedand allוְכָל־ (wə·ḵāl)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyher slainחֲלָלֶ֖יהָ (ḥă·lā·le·hā)Noun - masculine plural construct | third person feminine singularStrong's 2491: Pierced, pollutedwill lie fallenיִפְּל֥וּ (yip·pə·lū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 5307: To fall, liewithin her.בְתוֹכָֽהּ׃ (ḇə·ṯō·w·ḵāh)Preposition-b | Noun - masculine singular construct | third person feminine singularStrong's 8432: A bisection, the centreJump to PreviousAshamed Babylon Cause Confounded Dead Disgraced Engraved Execute Fall Fallen Falling Graven Idols Images Judgment Lie Midst Punish Punishment Shame Shamed Slain Surely Time Whole
