Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(63) Thou shalt bind a stone to it.--The meaning of the symbolic act, which has its parallel in the girdle of Jeremiah 13:1-7, in the potter's vessel of Jeremiah 19:10, and in the yokes of Jeremiah 27:2, is explained in the following verse. The parchment roll by itself might have floated, and been picked up and read, and so the stone was tied to it that it might sink at once, and thus prefigure the destruction of the city. (Compare the reappearance of the symbols in Revelation 18:21, in connection with the destruction of the mystical Babylon.)Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewWhen you finishכְּכַלֹּ֣תְךָ֔ (kə·ḵal·lō·ṯə·ḵā)Preposition-k | Verb - Piel - Infinitive construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 3615: To be complete, at an end, finished, accomplished, or spentreadingלִקְרֹ֖א (liq·rō)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Infinitive constructStrong's 7121: To call, proclaim, readthisהַזֶּ֑ה (haz·zeh)Article | Pronoun - masculine singularStrong's 2088: This, thatscroll,הַסֵּ֣פֶר (has·sê·p̄er)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5612: A missive, document, writing, booktieתִּקְשֹׁ֤ר (tiq·šōr)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - second person masculine singularStrong's 7194: To tie, gird, confine, compact, in love, leaguea stoneאֶ֔בֶן (’e·ḇen)Noun - feminine singularStrong's 68: A stoneto itעָלָיו֙ (‘ā·lāw)Preposition | third person masculine singularStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstand cast itוְהִשְׁלַכְתּ֖וֹ (wə·hiš·laḵ·tōw)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Conjunctive perfect - second person masculine singular | third person masculine singularStrong's 7993: To throw out, down, awayintoאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, tothe Euphrates.פְּרָֽת׃ (pə·rāṯ)Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 6578: Euphrates -- a river of west AsiaJump to PreviousBind Book Cast Dropped End Ended Euphrates Euphra'tes Finish Fixed Middle Midst Phrat Reading Scroll Soon Stone Throw Tie
