Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(27) At her feet.--Literally, between her feet, as though the dauntless woman had stridden over him as he lay in the dead sleep of weariness. He bowed.--The word means that he suddenly curled up his knees in one contortion of agony. He fell.--Rolling, perhaps, off the divan on which he was resting. He lay down.--Motionless in death, after that one convulsive movement.Dead.--Rather, slaughtered, or murdered. With this one terrific word the scene ends, as with a blow.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewAtבֵּ֣ין (bên)PrepositionStrong's 996: An interval, space betweenher feetרַגְלֶ֔יהָ (raḡ·le·hā)Noun - fdc | third person feminine singularStrong's 7272: A foot, a step, the pudendahe collapsed,כָּרַ֥ע (kā·ra‘)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 3766: To bend the knee, to sink, to prostratehe fell,נָפַ֖ל (nā·p̄al)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5307: To fall, liethere he lay still;שָׁכָ֑ב (šā·ḵāḇ)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 7901: To lie downatבֵּ֤ין (bên)PrepositionStrong's 996: An interval, space betweenher feetרַגְלֶ֙יהָ֙ (raḡ·le·hā)Noun - fdc | third person feminine singularStrong's 7272: A foot, a step, the pudendahe collapsed,כָּרַ֣ע (kā·ra‘)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 3766: To bend the knee, to sink, to prostratehe fell;נָפָ֔ל (nā·p̄āl)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5307: To fall, liewhereבַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר (ba·’ă·šer)Preposition-b | Pronoun - relativeStrong's 834: Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order thathe collapsed,כָּרַ֔ע (kā·ra‘)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 3766: To bend the knee, to sink, to prostratethereשָׁ֖ם (šām)AdverbStrong's 8033: There, then, thitherhe fellנָפַ֥ל (nā·p̄al)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5307: To fall, liedead.שָׁדֽוּד׃ (šā·ḏūḏ)Verb - Qal - QalPassParticiple - masculine singularStrong's 7703: To deal violently with, despoil, devastate, ruinJump to PreviousBent Bowed Dead Death Destroyed Lay Sank Stretched Sunk
