Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(10) The gods of the Amorites.--See Joshua 24:15; 1Kings 21:26. As the Amorites seem to have been the highlanders of Palestine, and the most powerful of all the Canaanitish tribes, their name is sometimes used for that of all the Canaanites (Joshua 24:15). Thus Heber says:--"As when five monarchs led to Gibeon's fightIn rude array the harnessed Amorite."No deliverance can be promised till repentance has begun. When the warnings of the prophet are heeded the mission of the deliverer begins.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewAnd I saidוָאֹמְרָ֣ה (wā·’ō·mə·rāh)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - first person common singular | third person feminine singularStrong's 559: To utter, sayto you:לָכֶ֗ם (lā·ḵem)Preposition | second person masculine pluralStrong's Hebrew ‘Iאֲנִי֙ (’ă·nî)Pronoun - first person common singularStrong's 589: Iam the LORDיְהוָ֣ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelyour God.אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֔ם (’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem)Noun - masculine plural construct | second person masculine pluralStrong's 430: gods -- the supreme God, magistrates, a superlativeYou must notלֹ֤א (lō)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, noworshipתִֽירְאוּ֙ (ṯî·rə·’ū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 3372: To fear, to revere, caus, to frightenthe godsאֱלֹהֵ֣י (’ĕ·lō·hê)Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 430: gods -- the supreme God, magistrates, a superlativeof the Amorites,הָאֱמֹרִ֔י (hā·’ĕ·mō·rî)Article | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 567: Amorites -- perhaps 'mountain dwellers', a Canaanite tribein whoseאֲשֶׁ֥ר (’ă·šer)Pronoun - relativeStrong's 834: Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order thatlandבְּאַרְצָ֑ם (bə·’ar·ṣām)Preposition-b | Noun - feminine singular construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 776: Earth, landyouאַתֶּ֖ם (’at·tem)Pronoun - second person masculine pluralStrong's 859: Thou and thee, ye and youdwell.’יוֹשְׁבִ֣ים (yō·wō·šə·ḇîm)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine pluralStrong's 3427: To sit down, to dwell, to remain, to settle, to marryBut you did notוְלֹ֥א (wə·lō)Conjunctive waw | Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, noobey Me.”שְׁמַעְתֶּ֖ם (šə·ma‘·tem)Verb - Qal - Perfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 8085: To hear intelligentlyJump to PreviousAmorite Amorites Dwell Dwelling Ear Hearkened Heed Live Obeyed Pay Reverence Voice Worship
