Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(34) Remembered not the Lord their God.--According to Judges 9:46, they looked on Baal as their Elohim, and forgot that Jehovah was the one God. There was always this tendency to syncretism, as a half-way step towards idolatry. Zephaniah (Judges 1:5) mentions them "that swear by the Lord, and that swear by Malcham" (i.e., Moloch), and the Samaritans "feared the Lord and served their own gods" (2Kings 17:33).Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewThe Israelitesבְּנֵ֣י (bə·nê)Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 1121: A sonfailedוְלֹ֤א (wə·lō)Conjunctive waw | Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, noto rememberזָֽכְרוּ֙ (zā·ḵə·rū)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 2142: To mark, to remember, to mention, to be malethe LORDיְהוָ֖ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israeltheir Godאֱלֹהֵיהֶ֑ם (’ĕ·lō·hê·hem)Noun - masculine plural construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 430: gods -- the supreme God, magistrates, a superlativewho had deliveredהַמַּצִּ֥יל (ham·maṣ·ṣîl)Article | Verb - Hifil - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 5337: To strip, plunder, deliver oneself, be delivered, snatch away, deliverthemאוֹתָ֛ם (’ō·w·ṯām)Direct object marker | third person masculine pluralStrong's 853: Untranslatable mark of the accusative casefrom the handsמִיַּ֥ד (mî·yaḏ)Preposition-m | Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 3027: A handof allכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everytheir enemiesאֹיְבֵיהֶ֖ם (’ō·yə·ḇê·hem)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine plural construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 341: Hating, an adversaryon every side.מִסָּבִֽיב׃ (mis·sā·ḇîḇ)Preposition-m | AdverbStrong's 5439: A circle, neighbour, environs, aroundJump to PreviousChildren Delivered Delivering Enemies Hand Hands Haters Israel Minds Remember Remembered Rescued Round Saviour Side
