Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(16) And Moses diligently sought the goat.--That is, the flesh of the goat of the sin offering which was offered by the nation on the eighth day. (See Leviticus 9:15.)And, behold, it was burnt.--Being overwhelmed with grief at the loss of their brothers, Eleazar and Ithamar could not eat, and as none but priests were allowed to partake of the flesh of the sin offering, they burnt it on the altar, to prevent its corruption. They did this all the more readily since the flesh of Aaron's sin offering was just before burnt without the camp. (See Leviticus 9:11.)And he was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar.--As it was Aaron's duty quite as much as his two sons to eat of the flesh, Moses probably omitted to mention his name, because he wished to spare the honour of the pontiff in the sight of the people.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewLater,וְאֵ֣ת ׀ (wə·’êṯ)Conjunctive waw | Direct object markerStrong's 853: Untranslatable mark of the accusative caseMosesמֹשֶׁ֖ה (mō·šeh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 4872: Moses -- a great Israelite leader, prophet and lawgiversearchedדָּרֹ֥שׁ (dā·rōš)Verb - Qal - Infinitive absoluteStrong's 1875: To tread, frequent, to follow, to seek, ask, to worshipcarefullyדָּרַ֛שׁ (dā·raš)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 1875: To tread, frequent, to follow, to seek, ask, to worshipfor the goatשְׂעִ֣יר (śə·‘îr)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 8163: Shaggy, a he-goat, a faunof the sin offering,הַֽחַטָּ֗את (ha·ḥaṭ·ṭāṯ)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 2403: An offence, its penalty, occasion, sacrifice, expiation, an offenderand behold,וְהִנֵּ֣ה (wə·hin·nêh)Conjunctive waw | InterjectionStrong's 2009: Lo! behold!it had been burned up.שֹׂרָ֑ף (śō·rāp̄)Verb - Pual - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 8313: To be, on fireHe was angryוַ֠יִּקְצֹף (way·yiq·ṣōp̄)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 7107: To crack off, burst out in ragewithעַל־ (‘al-)PrepositionStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstEleazarאֶלְעָזָ֤ר (’el·‘ā·zār)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 499: Eleazar -- 'God has helped', six Israelitesand Ithamar,אִֽיתָמָר֙ (’î·ṯā·mār)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 385: Ithamar -- 'land of palms', a son of AaronAaron’sאַהֲרֹ֔ן (’a·hă·rōn)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 175: Aaron -- an elder brother of Mosessurvivingהַנּוֹתָרִ֖ם (han·nō·w·ṯā·rim)Article | Verb - Nifal - Participle - masculine pluralStrong's 3498: To jut over, exceed, to excel, to remain, be left, to leave, cause to abound, preservesons,בְּנֵ֣י (bə·nê)Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 1121: A sonand asked,לֵאמֹֽר׃ (lê·mōr)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Infinitive constructStrong's 559: To utter, sayJump to PreviousAaron Aaron's Alive Angry Burned Burnt Carefully Diligently Eleazar Elea'zar Found Goat Inquired Ithamar Ith'amar Moses Offering Remaining Searched Sin Sin-Offering Sought Surviving Wroth
