Ellicott's Commentary
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(37) And if any part of their carcase.--The principle which underlies the immunity from pollution of living water is also at the basis of the exception of living plants. Hence if the carcase or a portion of a dead reptile is found among grain destined for sowing, the quantity of wheat in which it is discovered does not become defiled, since the growing plant constantly derives new elements from below and fresh moisture from above, thus undergoing as many changes in its way as spring water. The law therefore which obtained during the second Temple was as follows :--"Whatever is fixed in the ground does not contract defilement. Plants are not defiled till they are gathered." Hence the ancient Chaldee version of Jonathan renders this verse: "If any part of their carcase falleth upon any seed that is sown in the manner in which it is commonly sown--that is, in its dry state--it is clean."Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewIfוְכִ֤י (wə·ḵî)Conjunctive waw | ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctiona carcassמִנִּבְלָתָ֔ם (min·niḇ·lā·ṯām)Preposition-m | Noun - feminine singular construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 5038: A flabby thing, a carcase, carrion, an idolfallsיִפֹּל֙ (yip·pōl)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5307: To fall, lieonעַל־ (‘al-)PrepositionStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstanyכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyseedזֶ֥רַע (ze·ra‘)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 2233: Seed, fruit, plant, sowing-time, posterityfor sowing,זֵר֖וּעַ (zê·rū·a‘)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 2221: Something sown, a plant[the seed]הֽוּא׃ (hū)Pronoun - third person masculine singularStrong's 1931: He, self, the same, this, that, as, areis clean;טָה֖וֹר (ṭā·hō·wr)Adjective - masculine singularStrong's 2889: Clean, pureJump to PreviousAught Body Carcase Carcass Clean Dead Fall Falleth Falls Gets Part Planted Planting Seed Seeds Sowing Sown
