Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(4) Nevertheless these shall ye not eat.--As there are some quadrupeds which comply with only one of the two above-named conditions--i.e., which ruminate but have not their hoofs perfectly parted in two, or, vice versa, are bisulcous and not ruminant--it is here declared that such animals must not be eaten. As the camel, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not . . . --Better, though he cheweth the cud, yet he divideth not, as the same phrase is properly rendered in the Authorised Version in Leviticus 11:7. The first animal adduced to illustrate this fact is the indispensable camel, or "the ship of the desert," as it is aptly called. Though cloven-footed above, the toes of the camel are united below in a large elastic pad on which the camel treads, and which is like the sole of a shoe. Hence it does not come within the category of those animals which are thoroughly bisulcate. The Egyptians, the Zebii, and the Hindus, too, did not eat camel's flesh, because they supposed it to be heating, and to engender cruelty and revenge; whilst the Persians, the ancient Arabians, and the Moslems feasted upon its milk and flesh.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewButאַ֤ךְ (’aḵ)AdverbStrong's 389: A particle of affirmation, surelyof thoseאֶת־ (’eṯ-)Direct object markerStrong's 853: Untranslatable mark of the accusative casethat chewמִֽמַּעֲלֵי֙ (mim·ma·‘ă·lê)Preposition-m | Verb - Hifil - Participle - masculine plural constructStrong's 5927: To ascend, in, activelythe cudהַגֵּרָ֔ה (hag·gê·rāh)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 1625: The cudor have splitוּמִמַּפְרִיסֵ֖י (ū·mim·map̄·rî·sê)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-m | Verb - Hifil - Participle - masculine plural constructStrong's 6536: To break in pieces, to split, distributehooves,הַפַּרְסָ֑ה (hap·par·sāh)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 6541: A claw, split hoofyou are notלֹ֣א (lō)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, noto eatתֹֽאכְל֔וּ (ṯō·ḵə·lū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 398: To eatthe following:זֶה֙ (zeh)Pronoun - masculine singularStrong's 2088: This, thatThe camel,הַ֠גָּמָל (hag·gā·māl)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 1581: A camelthoughכִּֽי־ (kî-)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionitה֗וּא (hū)Pronoun - third person masculine singularStrong's 1931: He, self, the same, this, that, as, arechewsמַעֲלֵ֨ה (ma·‘ă·lêh)Verb - Hifil - Participle - masculine singular constructStrong's 5927: To ascend, in, activelythe cud,גֵרָ֜ה (ḡê·rāh)Noun - feminine singularStrong's 1625: The cuddoes notאֵינֶ֣נּוּ (’ê·nen·nū)Adverb | third person masculine singularStrong's 369: A non-entity, a negative particlehave a splitמַפְרִ֔יס (map̄·rîs)Verb - Hifil - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 6536: To break in pieces, to split, distributehoof;וּפַרְסָה֙ (ū·p̄ar·sāh)Conjunctive waw | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 6541: A claw, split hoofitה֖וּא (hū)Pronoun - third person masculine singularStrong's 1931: He, self, the same, this, that, as, areis uncleanטָמֵ֥א (ṭā·mê)Adjective - masculine singularStrong's 2931: Uncleanfor you.לָכֶֽם׃ (lā·ḵem)Preposition | second person masculine pluralStrong's Hebrew Jump to PreviousBeasts Camel Ceremonially Chew Cheweth Chews Cloven Cud Divide Divideth Dividing Eat Food Foot Hoof Hoofs Horn Nevertheless Part Parted Parteth Split Time Unclean y
