Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(51) And he shall look on the plague.--If at the end of the week, when the priest examines it again, he finds that the distemper has spread, it undoubtedly indicates malignant leprosy. Here, again, the symptom of spreading is the same in the garment as in the human being. (See Leviticus 13:5-6; Leviticus 13:8, &c.) The leprous garment, like a human leper, makes everything and everybody unclean by contact with it, or by coming into the house where it remains.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewOn the seventhהַשְּׁבִיעִ֗י (haš·šə·ḇî·‘î)Article | Number - ordinal masculine singularStrong's 7637: Seventh (an ordinal number)dayבַּיּ֣וֹם (bay·yō·wm)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3117: A daythe priest shall reexamineוְרָאָ֨ה (wə·rā·’āh)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 7200: To seeit,אֶת־ (’eṯ-)Direct object markerStrong's 853: Untranslatable mark of the accusative caseand ifכִּֽי־ (kî-)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionthe mildewהַנֶּ֜גַע (han·ne·ḡa‘)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5061: Mark -- a blow, a spothas spreadפָשָׂ֤ה (p̄ā·śāh)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 6581: To spreadin the fabric,בַּ֠בֶּגֶד (bab·be·ḡeḏ)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 899: A covering, clothing, treachery, pillageweave,בַשְּׁתִ֤י (ḇaš·šə·ṯî)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 8359: A fixture, the warp in weavingknit,בָעֵ֙רֶב֙ (ḇā·‘ê·reḇ)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 6154: Arabia -- mixture, mixed companyorאֽוֹ־ (’ōw-)ConjunctionStrong's 176: Desire, ifleather,בָע֔וֹר (ḇā·‘ō·wr)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5785: Skin, hide, leatherthen regardless ofלְכֹ֛ל (lə·ḵōl)Preposition-l | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyhowאֲשֶׁר־ (’ă·šer-)Pronoun - relativeStrong's 834: Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order thatitהָע֖וֹר (hā·‘ō·wr)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5785: Skin, hide, leatheris used,יֵעָשֶׂ֥ה (yê·‘ā·śeh)Verb - Nifal - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 6213: To do, make[it]הַנֶּ֖גַע (han·ne·ḡa‘)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5061: Mark -- a blow, a spotis a harmfulמַמְאֶ֛רֶת (mam·’e·reṯ)Verb - Hifil - Participle - feminine singularStrong's 3992: To be bitter, to embitter, be painfulmildew;צָרַ֧עַת (ṣā·ra·‘aṯ)Noun - feminine singularStrong's 6883: Leprosy[the article]הֽוּא׃ (hū)Pronoun - third person masculine singularStrong's 1931: He, self, the same, this, that, as, areis unclean.טָמֵ֥א (ṭā·mê)Adjective - masculine singularStrong's 2931: UncleanJump to PreviousBiting Clothing Corroding Destructive Either Fretting Garment Increased Knitted Leprosy Malignancy Malignant Mark Mildew Plague Purpose Service Seventh Skin Spread Threads Unclean Use Used Warp Whatever Whether Woof Work Woven
