Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(23) And if it be on her bed.--Better, and if any object be on her bed, that is, if anything happen to lie on her bed. When he toucheth it.--Rather, if he toucheth it. Whilst the former two verses declare that if any one touches the bed itself, or the thing on which she sat, he contracts such a degree of defilement that he must wash his clothes, bathe his whole body, and remain in a state of pollution till sundown, the verse before us enacts that if he happens to touch any vessel, garment, or any other objects which are lying on the defiling bed or seat in question, he has only to remain unclean till sundown, without having to wash his garments. The defilement in this case is not primary, but secondary. It is no more the bed or seat which defiled by direct contact, but an object which the defiled bed or seat had defiled, the pollution in this case being indirect.Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrewand whetherוְאִ֨ם (wə·’im)Conjunctive waw | ConjunctionStrong's 518: Lo!, whether?, if, although, Oh that!, when, notit isה֗וּא (hū)Pronoun - third person masculine singularStrong's 1931: He, self, the same, this, that, as, area bedהַמִּשְׁכָּ֜ב (ham·miš·kāḇ)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4904: Place of lying, a couch, act of lyingorא֧וֹ (’ōw)ConjunctionStrong's 176: Desire, iffurnitureהַכְּלִ֛י (hak·kə·lî)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3627: Something prepared, any apparatusonעַֽל־ (‘al-)PrepositionStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstwhichאֲשֶׁר־ (’ă·šer-)Pronoun - relativeStrong's 834: Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order thatsheהִ֥וא (hî)Pronoun - third person feminine singularStrong's 1931: He, self, the same, this, that, as, arewas sitting,יֹשֶֽׁבֶת־ (yō·še·ḇeṯ-)Verb - Qal - Participle - feminine singularStrong's 3427: To sit down, to dwell, to remain, to settle, to marrywhoever touchesבְּנָגְעוֹ־ (bə·nā·ḡə·‘ōw-)Preposition-b | Verb - Qal - Infinitive construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 5060: To touch, lay the hand upon, to reach, violently, to strikeitב֑וֹ (ḇōw)Preposition | third person masculine singularStrong's Hebrew will be uncleanיִטְמָ֖א (yiṭ·mā)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 2930: To be or become uncleanuntilעַד־ (‘aḏ-)PrepositionStrong's 5704: As far as, even to, up to, until, whileevening.הָעָֽרֶב׃ (hā·‘ā·reḇ)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 6153: EveningJump to PreviousEvening Seated Sits Sitteth Sitting Touches Toucheth Touching Unclean Vessel Whereon Whether
