Ellicott's Commentary
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(27) For all these abominations.--Though the contents of this verse are substantially the same as those in Leviticus 18:24-25, yet the wording is different. In the former the Israelites are exhorted not to pollute themselves as the different tribes or nations have both polluted themselves and the land, whilst here the inhabitants of Canaan are more specifically described as having practised the abominations. The repetition of the same sentiments in diiferent words, as is frequently the case in Hebrew, is designed to impart emphasis. The parentheses are unnecessary.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewForכִּ֚י (kî)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionthe menאַנְשֵֽׁי־ (’an·šê-)Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 376: A man as an individual, a male personwho were in the landהָאָ֖רֶץ (hā·’ā·reṣ)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 776: Earth, landbefore youלִפְנֵיכֶ֑ם (lip̄·nê·ḵem)Preposition-l | Noun - masculine plural construct | second person masculine pluralStrong's 6440: The facecommittedעָשׂ֥וּ (‘ā·śū)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 6213: To do, makeallכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everytheseהָאֵ֔ל (hā·’êl)Article | Pronoun - common pluralStrong's 411: These, thoseabominations,הַתּוֹעֵבֹ֣ת (hat·tō·w·‘ê·ḇōṯ)Article | Noun - feminine pluralStrong's 8441: Something disgusting, an abhorrence, idolatry, an idoland the landהָאָֽרֶץ׃ (hā·’ā·reṣ)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 776: Earth, landhas become defiled.וַתִּטְמָ֖א (wat·tiṭ·mā)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 2930: To be or become uncleanJump to PreviousAbominations Country Defiled Disgusting Unclean
