Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(5) Baken in a pan.--Better, a flat plate. This is probably the iron fire-plate (Ezekiel 5:3), with a convex surface, which is placed horizontally upon stones about nine inches from the ground, and underneath which the fire is kindled, used by the Arabs to this day. The large thin cakes, and the thin wafer bread, are laid upon the convex surface, where they are baked in comparatively few minutes. These baking operations took place in the court of the sanctuary, where the vessels of ministration were kept (Ezekiel 46:20; 1Chronicles 23:28-29).Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewIfוְאִם־ (wə·’im-)Conjunctive waw | ConjunctionStrong's 518: Lo!, whether?, if, although, Oh that!, when, notyour offeringקָרְבָּנֶ֑ךָ (qā·rə·bā·ne·ḵā)Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 7133: Something brought near the altar, a sacrificial presentis a grain offeringמִנְחָ֥ה (min·ḥāh)Noun - feminine singularStrong's 4503: A donation, tribute, a sacrificial offeringprepared onעַל־ (‘al-)PrepositionStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againsta griddle,הַֽמַּחֲבַ֖ת (ham·ma·ḥă·ḇaṯ)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 4227: A flat plate, pan, griddleit must beתִהְיֶֽה׃ (ṯih·yeh)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 1961: To fall out, come to pass, become, beunleavened breadמַצָּ֥ה (maṣ·ṣāh)Noun - feminine singularStrong's 4682: Sweetness, sweet, an unfermented cake, loaf, the festival of Passovermade of fine flourסֹ֛לֶת (sō·leṯ)Noun - feminine singularStrong's 5560: Fine flourmixedבְּלוּלָ֥ה (bə·lū·lāh)Verb - Qal - QalPassParticiple - feminine singularStrong's 1101: To mingle, mix, confuse, confoundwith oil.בַשֶּׁ֖מֶן (ḇaš·še·men)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 8081: Grease, liquid, richnessJump to PreviousBaked Baking-Pan Cereal Cooked Fine Flat Flour Grain Griddle Meal Meal-Offering Meat Meat-Offering Mingled Mixed Oblation Offering Oil Pan Plate Prepared Unleavened Yeast
