Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(30) if it be not redeemed within the space of a full year.--That is, either by the vendor or his son. According to the interpretation which obtained during the second Temple, the phrase "full year" is here used for the benefit of the seller, inasmuch as it gives him the advantage of an intercalary year, when he has an additional month, up to the last day of which he could still effect the redemption. Moreover, as the purchaser sometimes concealed himself towards the end of the year, in order to prevent the seller from redeeming his house, it was enacted that the original proprietor should hand over the redemption money to the public authorities when the purchaser could not be found, break open the doors, and take possession of the house; and if the purchaser died during the year, the vendor could redeem it from his heir.It shall not go out in the jubile.--If the vendor, however, failed to redeem the house within the prescribed period, it was not to be subject to the laws of jubile like the land, but is to remain for ever the property of the purchaser.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewIfוְאִ֣ם (wə·’im)Conjunctive waw | ConjunctionStrong's 518: Lo!, whether?, if, although, Oh that!, when, notit is notלֹֽא־ (lō-)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, noredeemedיִגָּאֵ֗ל (yig·gā·’êl)Verb - Nifal - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 1350: To redeem, act as kinsmanby the endעַד־ (‘aḏ-)PrepositionStrong's 5704: As far as, even to, up to, until, whileof a fullתְמִימָה֒ (ṯə·mî·māh)Adjective - feminine singularStrong's 8549: Entire, integrity, truthyear,שָׁנָ֣ה (šā·nāh)Noun - feminine singularStrong's 8141: A yearthen the houseהַבַּ֨יִת (hab·ba·yiṯ)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 1004: A housein the walledחֹמָ֗ה (ḥō·māh)Noun - feminine singularStrong's 2346: A wall of protectioncityבָּעִ֜יר (bā·‘îr)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 5892: Excitementis permanentlyלַצְּמִיתֻ֛ת (laṣ·ṣə·mî·ṯuṯ)Preposition-l, Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 6783: Excision, destruction, extinction, perpetuallytransferred to its buyerלַקֹּנֶ֥ה (laq·qō·neh)Preposition-l, Article | Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 7069: To erect, create, to procure, by purchase, to ownand his descendants.לְדֹרֹתָ֑יו (lə·ḏō·rō·ṯāw)Preposition-l | Noun - masculine plural construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 1755: A revolution of time, an age, generation, a dwellingIt is notלֹ֥א (lō)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, noto be releasedיֵצֵ֖א (yê·ṣê)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 3318: To go, bring, out, direct and proximin the Jubilee.בַּיֹּבֵֽל׃ (bay·yō·ḇêl)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3104: A ram, ram's horn (a wind instrument)Jump to PreviousBelong Bought Buyer City Complete End Established Extinction Full Fulness Generations House Jubilee Money Passed Passes Perfect Permanently Perpetuity Property Purchaser Redeemed Released Space Sure Throughout Walled Whole Within
