Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(45) Moreover of the children of the strangers.--Besides the surrounding nations, the Hebrews are also permitted to obtain their slaves from those strangers who have taken up their abode in the Holy Land. By these strangers the ancient authorities understand those who have been permitted to settle down among the Jews on condition that they submit to the seven commandments given to Noah, but have not embraced Judaism. Hence the Chaldee Version translates this phrase, "the children of uncircumcised strangers."And they shall be your possession.--These, but not the Hebrews, the masters may hold as their absolute property.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewYou may alsoוְ֠גַם (wə·ḡam)Conjunctive waw | ConjunctionStrong's 1571: Assemblage, also, even, yea, though, both, andpurchase themתִּקְנ֔וּ (tiq·nū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 7069: To erect, create, to procure, by purchase, to ownfrom theמִבְּנֵ֨י (mib·bə·nê)Preposition-m | Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 1121: A sonforeignersהַתּוֹשָׁבִ֜ים (hat·tō·wō·šā·ḇîm)Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 8453: Resident alienresidingהַגָּרִ֤ים (hag·gā·rîm)Article | Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine pluralStrong's 1481: To turn aside from the road, sojourn, to shrink, fear, to gather for, hostilityamong youעִמָּכֶם֙ (‘im·mā·ḵem)Preposition | second person masculine pluralStrong's 5973: With, equally withor their clansוּמִמִּשְׁפַּחְתָּם֙ (ū·mim·miš·paḥ·tām)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-m | Noun - feminine singular construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 4940: A family, circle of relatives, a class, a species, sort, a tribe, peopleliving among youעִמָּכֶ֔ם (‘im·mā·ḵem)Preposition | second person masculine pluralStrong's 5973: With, equally withwhoאֲשֶׁ֥ר (’ă·šer)Pronoun - relativeStrong's 834: Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order thatare bornהוֹלִ֖ידוּ (hō·w·lî·ḏū)Verb - Hifil - Perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 3205: To bear young, to beget, medically, to act as midwife, to show lineagein your land.בְּאַרְצְכֶ֑ם (bə·’ar·ṣə·ḵem)Preposition-b | Noun - feminine singular construct | second person masculine pluralStrong's 776: Earth, landThese may becomeוְהָי֥וּ (wə·hā·yū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 1961: To fall out, come to pass, become, beyourלָכֶ֖ם (lā·ḵem)Preposition | second person masculine pluralStrong's Hebrew property.לַֽאֲחֻזָּֽה׃ (la·’ă·ḥuz·zāh)Preposition-l | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 272: Something seized, a possessionJump to PreviousAcquisition Addition Aliens Begat Begotten Buy Children Clans Conceived Country Dwell Families Family Gain Live Members Money Moreover Nations Possession Produced Property Residents Servants Sojourn Sojourners Strangers Temporary
