Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(43) The land also shall be left of them.--Better, but the land shall be deserted by them. The solemn warning is here reiterated, that before God will remember His covenant with the patriarchs, and also be mindful of the land, the land must be depopulated of its rebellious inhabitants, and enjoy the Sabbaths which have been denied to it. This verse, therefore which is substantially a repetition of Leviticus 26:33-34, seems to have been inserted here to deprecate more solemnly the heinousness of their sins.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewFor the landוְהָאָרֶץ֩ (wə·hā·’ā·reṣ)Conjunctive waw, Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 776: Earth, landwill be abandonedתֵּעָזֵ֨ב (tê·‘ā·zêḇ)Verb - Nifal - Imperfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 5800: To loosen, relinquish, permitby them,מֵהֶ֜ם (mê·hem)Preposition-m | Pronoun - third person masculine pluralStrong's 1992: Theyand it will enjoyוְתִ֣רֶץ (wə·ṯi·reṣ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive imperfect Jussive - third person feminine singularStrong's 7521: To be pleased with, to satisfy a, debtits Sabbathsשַׁבְּתֹתֶ֗יהָ (šab·bə·ṯō·ṯe·hā)Noun - common plural construct | third person feminine singularStrong's 7676: Intermission, the Sabbathby lying desolateבָּהְשַׁמָּה֙ (bā·hə·šam·māh)Preposition-b | Verb - Hofal - Infinitive construct | third person feminine singularStrong's 8074: To stun, devastate, stupefywithout them.מֵהֶ֔ם (mê·hem)Preposition-m | Pronoun - third person masculine pluralStrong's 1992: TheyAnd theyוְהֵ֖ם (wə·hêm)Conjunctive waw | Pronoun - third person masculine pluralStrong's 1992: Theywill pay the penaltyיִרְצ֣וּ (yir·ṣū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 7521: To be pleased with, to satisfy a, debtfor their iniquity,עֲוֺנָ֑ם (‘ă·wō·nām)Noun - common singular construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 5771: Iniquity, guilt, punishment for iniquitybecauseיַ֣עַן (ya·‘an)AdverbStrong's 3282: Heed, purpose, to indicate the reason, causethey rejectedמָאָ֔סוּ (mā·’ā·sū)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 3988: To spurn, to disappearMy ordinancesבְּמִשְׁפָּטַ֣י (bə·miš·pā·ṭay)Preposition-b | Noun - masculine plural construct | first person common singularStrong's 4941: A verdict, a sentence, formal decree, divine law, penalty, justice, privilege, styleand abhorredגָּעֲלָ֥ה (gā·‘ă·lāh)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 1602: To detest, to rejectMy statutes.חֻקֹּתַ֖י (ḥuq·qō·ṯay)Noun - feminine plural construct | first person common singularStrong's 2708: Something prescribed, an enactment, statuteJump to PreviousAbandoned Abhorred Accept Desolate Despised Enjoy Forsaken Iniquity Judgments Lies Meanwhile Ordinances Paid Punishment Rejected Sabbaths Soul Statutes
