Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(27) And if it be of an unclean beast.--That is, if he vows the firstling of an unclean beast he could redeem it according to the valuation of the priest with the addition of one-fifth over and above the fixed value. If he did not redeem it the treasurer of the sanctuary sold it to anyone who liked to buy it at this valuation, and the proceeds were devoted to the maintenance and repairs of the sanctuary. As this is at variance with the law laid down in Exodus 13:13; Exodus 34:20, where it is enacted that the firstborn of an ass is either to be redeemed with a sheep, or is to be put to death, the authorities during the second Temple interpreted the precept in the passage before us as not applying to the firstborn of the unclean animals, but to unclean animals generally which are dedicated for the repairs of the sanctuary.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewBut ifוְאִ֨ם (wə·’im)Conjunctive waw | ConjunctionStrong's 518: Lo!, whether?, if, although, Oh that!, when, not[it is] among the uncleanהַטְּמֵאָה֙ (haṭ·ṭə·mê·’āh)Article | Adjective - feminine singularStrong's 2931: Uncleananimals,בַּבְּהֵמָ֤ה (bab·bə·hê·māh)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 929: A dumb beast, any large quadruped, animalthen he may redeemוּפָדָ֣ה (ū·p̄ā·ḏāh)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 6299: To sever, ransom, gener, to release, preserveit according to your valuationבְעֶרְכֶּ֔ךָ (ḇə·‘er·ke·ḵā)Preposition-b | Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 6187: A pile, equipment, estimateand addוְיָסַ֥ף (wə·yā·sap̄)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 3254: To add, augmenta fifthחֲמִשִׁת֖וֹ (ḥă·mi·ši·ṯōw)Number - ordinal feminine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 2549: Fifth, a fifthof its value.עָלָ֑יו (‘ā·lāw)Preposition | third person masculine singularStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstIfוְאִם־ (wə·’im-)Conjunctive waw | ConjunctionStrong's 518: Lo!, whether?, if, although, Oh that!, when, notit is notלֹ֥א (lō)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, noredeemed,יִגָּאֵ֖ל (yig·gā·’êl)Verb - Nifal - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 1350: To redeem, act as kinsmanthen it shall be soldוְנִמְכַּ֥ר (wə·nim·kar)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Nifal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 4376: To sellaccording to your valuation.בְּעֶרְכֶּֽךָ׃ (bə·‘er·ke·ḵā)Preposition-b | Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 6187: A pile, equipment, estimateJump to PreviousAdd Adding Agreement Animal Animals Beast Buy Estimation Fifth Fixed Money One-Fifth Owner Part Ransom Redeem Redeemed Sold Thereof Thereto Unclean Valuation Value
