Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(6) From a month old even unto five years old.--That is, if a parent, or any other person, devotes his or anyone else's child to the sanctuary, he is obliged to be redeemed according to the prescribed valuation. The formula used in such a case during the second Temple was, "Behold the estimation of this my boy, or this my girl, or of that boy or that girl, be upon me."The male five shekels of silver.--As at this tender age the service of a child is not of much value, the vower is to pay for a boy 12s. 11d.The female . . . three shekels of silver.--The girl being proportionately less valuable, is to be redeemed at 7s. 9d.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewNow if [the person is]וְאִ֣ם (wə·’im)Conjunctive waw | ConjunctionStrong's 518: Lo!, whether?, if, although, Oh that!, when, notone monthחֹ֗דֶשׁ (ḥō·ḏeš)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 2320: The new moon, a monthtoוְעַד֙ (wə·‘aḏ)Conjunctive waw | PrepositionStrong's 5704: As far as, even to, up to, until, whilefiveחָמֵ֣שׁ (ḥā·mêš)Number - feminine singularStrong's 2568: Fiveyears of age,שָׁנִ֔ים (šā·nîm)Noun - feminine pluralStrong's 8141: A yearthen your valuationעֶרְכְּךָ֙ (‘er·kə·ḵā)Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 6187: A pile, equipment, estimatefor the maleהַזָּכָ֔ר (haz·zā·ḵār)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 2145: Remembered, a maleshall beוְהָיָ֤ה (wə·hā·yāh)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 1961: To fall out, come to pass, become, befiveחֲמִשָּׁ֥ה (ḥă·miš·šāh)Number - masculine singularStrong's 2568: Fiveshekelsשְׁקָלִ֖ים (šə·qā·lîm)Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 8255: A weight, a commercial standardof silver,כָּ֑סֶף (kā·sep̄)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3701: Silver, moneyand for the femaleוְלַנְּקֵבָ֣ה (wə·lan·nə·qê·ḇāh)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-l, Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 5347: A femalethreeשְׁלֹ֥שֶׁת (šə·lō·šeṯ)Number - masculine singular constructStrong's 7969: Three, third, thriceshekelsשְׁקָלִ֖ים (šə·qā·lîm)Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 8255: A weight, a commercial standardof silver.כָּֽסֶף׃ (kā·sep̄)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3701: Silver, moneyJump to PreviousEstimation Female Five Male Month Shekels Silver Three Valuation Value Years
