Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(7) From sixty years old and above.--Being almost past labour, the old man is next in value to the child.A male . . . fifteen shekels.--The old man is therefore to be redeemed at 1 18s. 9d.The female ten shekels.--The old woman, from sixty and upwards, is estimated at exactly the same value as the girl from five to twenty years old (see Leviticus 27:5), and hence is to be redeemed at 1 5s. 10d. It will be seen that the disproportion between a man and a woman is not the same in old age as in youth. The authorities during the second Temple account for it by adducing the adage, "An old man in the house is always in the way; an old woman in the house is a treasure, she manages all household affairs."Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewAnd if [the person is]וְ֠אִם (wə·’im)Conjunctive waw | ConjunctionStrong's 518: Lo!, whether?, if, although, Oh that!, when, notsixtyשִׁשִּׁ֨ים (šiš·šîm)Number - common pluralStrong's 8346: Sixtyyears of ageשָׁנָ֤ה (šā·nāh)Noun - feminine singularStrong's 8141: A yearor older,וָמַ֙עְלָה֙ (wā·ma‘·lāh)Conjunctive waw | Adverb | third person feminine singularStrong's 4605: The upper part, with prefix upward, above, overhead, from the topthen your valuationעֶרְכְּךָ֔ (‘er·kə·ḵā)Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 6187: A pile, equipment, estimateshall beוְהָיָ֣ה (wə·hā·yāh)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 1961: To fall out, come to pass, become, befifteenחֲמִשָּׁ֥ה (ḥă·miš·šāh)Number - masculine singularStrong's 2568: Fiveshekelsשָׁ֑קֶל (šā·qel)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 8255: A weight, a commercial standardfor the maleזָכָ֔ר (zā·ḵār)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 2145: Remembered, a maleand tenעֲשָׂרָ֥ה (‘ă·śā·rāh)Number - masculine singularStrong's 6235: Tenshekelsשְׁקָלִֽים׃ (šə·qā·lîm)Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 8255: A weight, a commercial standardand for the female.וְלַנְּקֵבָ֖ה (wə·lan·nə·qê·ḇāh)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-l, Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 5347: A femaleJump to PreviousEstimation Female Fifteen Male Shekels Sixty Ten Upward Valuation Value
