Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(35) According to the offerings made by fire.--Better, upon the offerings made by fire. As the daily morning sacrifice was offered first every day, and as it continued burning on the altar all the forenoon, no fresh or special fire was to be kindled for it, but it was to be upon the fire sacrifices which had already been placed there before. (See Leviticus 3:5; Leviticus 5:12.) The flesh of the sin offering, both for the prince and for the individual members of the community, was not burnt without the camp, as was the case with the flesh of the sacrifice for the high priest and for the whole congregation, but was the perquisite of the priests, and was eaten by them (Leviticus 6:26-30). This is in harmony with the law. The sinner who brought the sin offering could not partake of it. Hence the priest was not permitted to eat of the flesh of the sin offering which he offered for himself, or of the flesh of the congregational sin offering, because he was a member of the congregation.Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrew[The priest] is to removeיָסִ֗יר (yā·sîr)Verb - Hifil - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5493: To turn asideallכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everythe fat,חֶלְבָּ֣ה (ḥel·bāh)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person feminine singularStrong's 2459: Fat, richest, choice partjust asכַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר (ka·’ă·šer)Preposition-k | Pronoun - relativeStrong's 834: Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order thatthe fatחֵֽלֶב־ (ḥê·leḇ-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 2459: Fat, richest, choice partof the lambהַכֶּשֶׂב֮ (hak·ke·śeḇ)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3775: A young sheepis removedיוּסַ֥ר (yū·sar)Verb - Hofal - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5493: To turn asidefrom the peace offerings,הַשְּׁלָמִים֒ (haš·šə·lā·mîm)Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 8002: A sacrifice for alliance or friendship, peace offeringand [he]הַכֹּהֵ֤ן (hak·kō·hên)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3548: Priestshall burnוְהִקְטִ֨יר (wə·hiq·ṭîr)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 6999: To smoke, turn into fragrance by fireit on the altarהַמִּזְבֵּ֔חָה (ham·miz·bê·ḥāh)Article | Noun - masculine singular | third person feminine singularStrong's 4196: An altaralong withעַ֖ל (‘al)PrepositionStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstthe offerings made by fireאִשֵּׁ֣י (’iš·šê)Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 801: A burnt-offering, a sacrificeto the LORD.יְהוָ֑ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of IsraelIn this way the priestהַכֹּהֵ֛ן (hak·kō·hên)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3548: Priestwill make atonementוְכִפֶּ֨ר (wə·ḵip·per)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Piel - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 3722: To cover, to expiate, condone, to placate, cancelfor himעָלָ֧יו (‘ā·lāw)Preposition | third person masculine singularStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstforעַל־ (‘al-)PrepositionStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstthe sinחַטָּאת֥וֹ (ḥaṭ·ṭā·ṯōw)Noun - feminine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 2403: An offence, its penalty, occasion, sacrifice, expiation, an offenderhe has committed,חָטָ֖א (ḥā·ṭā)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 2398: To miss, to sin, to forfeit, lack, expiate, repent, lead astray, condemnand he will be forgiven.וְנִסְלַ֥ח (wə·nis·laḥ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Nifal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5545: To forgive, pardonJump to PreviousAltar Atonement Burn Committed Fat Fire Forgiven Lamb Offerings Peace Peace-Offerings Priest Sacrifice Sin Sinned Smoke Thereof Touching
