Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(7) And the priest shall put.--That is, the high priest. With the finger thus dipped into it, he is to put some of the blood on each of the four horns of the golden altar on which the incense was offered. This process, too, was peculiar to the sacrifice of the sin offering. The altar was placed in the holy place before the vail which separated off the holy of holies (Exodus 30:1-6). According to the practice which obtained in the time of Christ, the priest began by putting the blood first on the north-east horn, then on the north-west, then on the south-west, and, lastly, on the south-east horn. He dipped his finger in the blood of the bowl at the sprinkling of each horn, and wiped his finger on the edge of the bowl between the separate sprinklings, as the blood which remained on his finger from one horn was not deemed fit to be put on the other. And shall pour all the blood.--That is, all the remaining blood. The bulk of the blood which remained, after expending the small quantity on the horns of the incense altar inside the sanctuary, the priest poured out at the bottom of the altar of burnt offering, which stood outside the holy place. At the time of the second Temple, there were at the southwest horn of this altar two holes, like two nostrils, through which the blood ran into a drain conveying it into the brook of Kedron.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewThe priestהַכֹּהֵ֨ן (hak·kō·hên)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3548: Priestmust then applyוְנָתַן֩ (wə·nā·ṯan)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5414: To give, put, setsome ofמִן־ (min-)PrepositionStrong's 4480: A part of, from, out ofthe bloodהַדָּ֜ם (had·dām)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 1818: Blood, of man, an animal, the juice of the grape, bloodshedtoעַל־ (‘al-)PrepositionStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstthe hornsקַ֠רְנוֹת (qar·nō·wṯ)Noun - feminine plural constructStrong's 7161: A horn, a flask, cornet, an elephant's tooth, a corner, a peak, a ray, powerof the altarמִזְבַּ֨ח (miz·baḥ)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 4196: An altarof fragrantהַסַּמִּים֙ (has·sam·mîm)Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 5561: Spice (used in incense)incenseקְטֹ֤רֶת (qə·ṭō·reṯ)Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 7004: Smoke, odor of (burning) sacrifice, incensethat is beforeלִפְנֵ֣י (lip̄·nê)Preposition-l | Noun - common plural constructStrong's 6440: The facethe LORDיְהוָ֔ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelin the Tentבְּאֹ֣הֶל (bə·’ō·hel)Preposition-b | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 168: A tentof Meeting.מוֹעֵ֑ד (mō·w·‘êḏ)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4150: Appointed time, place, or meetingAndוְאֵ֣ת ׀ (wə·’êṯ)Conjunctive waw | Direct object markerStrong's 853: Untranslatable mark of the accusative casehe is to pour outיִשְׁפֹּךְ֙ (yiš·pōḵ)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 8210: To spill forth, to expend, to sprawl outthe restכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyof the bull’sהַפָּ֗ר (hap·pār)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 6499: Young bull, steerbloodדַּ֣ם (dam)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1818: Blood, of man, an animal, the juice of the grape, bloodshedatאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, tothe baseיְסוֹד֙ (yə·sō·wḏ)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3247: Foundation, baseof the altarמִזְבַּ֣ח (miz·baḥ)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 4196: An altarof burnt offeringהָעֹלָ֔ה (hā·‘ō·lāh)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 5930: Whole burnt offeringat the entranceפֶּ֖תַח (pe·ṯaḥ)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 6607: An opening, door, entrance wayto the Tentאֹ֥הֶל (’ō·hel)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 168: A tentof Meeting.מוֹעֵֽד׃ (mō·w·‘êḏ)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4150: Appointed time, place, or meetingJump to PreviousAltar Base Blood Bottom Bull Bullock Burnt Burnt-Offering Congregation Door Fragrant Horns Incense Meeting Offering Pour Priest Remaining Rest Sweet Tabernacle Tent
