Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(16) And he shall make amends.--As the sacrifice was simply to atone for the transgression, the offender was in the first place to make restitution of the full value of the principal which he had inadvertently appropriated. And shall add the fifth part thereto.--Besides paying the principal, the fifth part of the value of the holy property thus restored is to be added to the original amount. According to the rules which obtained in the time of Christ, the principal was estimated as four-fifths of the whole, and the lacking one-fifth was added. Thus, for instance, if the offender had consumed holy things to the value of four shekels, he had to pay five shekels, the fifth being added to the four. This, according to our mode of reckoning, is one-fourth. No distinction is here made whether the offender be the high priest, a prince, or a private individual.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewRegarding any holy thingהַקֹּ֜דֶשׁ (haq·qō·ḏeš)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 6944: A sacred place, thing, sanctityhe has harmed,חָטָ֨א (ḥā·ṭā)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 2398: To miss, to sin, to forfeit, lack, expiate, repent, lead astray, condemnhe must make restitutionיְשַׁלֵּ֗ם (yə·šal·lêm)Verb - Piel - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 7999: To be safe, to be, completed, to be friendly, to reciprocateby addingיוֹסֵ֣ף (yō·w·sêp̄)Verb - Hifil - Imperfect Jussive - third person masculine singularStrong's 3254: To add, augmenta fifthחֲמִֽישִׁתוֹ֙ (ḥă·mî·ši·ṯōw)Number - ordinal feminine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 2549: Fifth, a fifthof its value to itעָלָ֔יו (‘ā·lāw)Preposition | third person masculine singularStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstand givingוְנָתַ֥ן (wə·nā·ṯan)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5414: To give, put, setit to the priest,לַכֹּהֵ֑ן (lak·kō·hên)Preposition-l, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3548: Priest[who]וְהַכֹּהֵ֗ן (wə·hak·kō·hên)Conjunctive waw, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3548: Priestwill make atonementיְכַפֵּ֥ר (yə·ḵap·pêr)Verb - Piel - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 3722: To cover, to expiate, condone, to placate, cancelon his behalfעָלָ֛יו (‘ā·lāw)Preposition | third person masculine singularStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstwith the ramבְּאֵ֥יל (bə·’êl)Preposition-b | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 352: Strength, strong, a chief, a ram, a pilaster, an oak, strong treeas a guilt offering,הָאָשָׁ֖ם (hā·’ā·šām)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 817: Guilt, a fault, a sin-offeringand he will be forgiven.וְנִסְלַ֥ח (wə·nis·laḥ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Nifal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5545: To forgive, pardonJump to PreviousAdd Amends Amiss Atonement Failed Fifth Forgiven Guilt Guilt-Offering Harm Holy Offering Part Priest Ram Regard Restitution Sinned Thereto Trespass Trespass-Offering Wrong
