About Mississippi Mass Choir
The Mississippi Mass Choir is an American gospel choir based in Jackson, Mississippi, known for their traditional African American gospel sound and vocal harmonies. The choir was founded in 1988 in Jackson by Frank Williams, a member of the Jackson Southernaires and an executive at Malaco Records. After open auditions, the group brought together over 100 voices from across the state of Mississippi. David R. Curry Jr. served as the choir's minister of music, and the group signed to Malaco Records.
The choir’s debut album, recorded live in 1988, reached the number one position on the Billboard Spiritual album chart and remained on the Billboard charts for 45 consecutive weeks. Their mission is described as "serving God through song." The choir’s catalog includes songs such as "When I Rose This Morning," "I'm Not Tired Yet," "God Is Keeping Me," "A City Built Four Square," "The Promise," "Good To Know Jesus," "He Reigns," and "Your Grace and Mercy."
The Mississippi Mass Choir received significant early recognition, winning Choir of the Year-Contemporary and Best New Artist of the Year-Traditional at the 9th annual James Cleveland GMWA Awards. They also received four Stellar Awards in 1989. Their album *It Remains to Be Seen* received a Soul Train Music Award for Best Gospel Album in 1993.
