Matthew Joseph West was born on April 25, 1977, in Downers Grove, Illinois. He is an American contemporary Christian singer-songwriter, author, and podcast host. West began his career as an independent musician in the late 1990s before signing with major labels including Universal South, Sparrow, and Provident Label Group.
West has achieved significant success as a songwriter for other Christian artists, including Casting Crowns, Mandisa, and Natalie Grant. He is known for his focus on storytelling and songs that address faith, grace, and personal struggles. His own catalog includes songs such as "More," "The Motions," "Hello, My Name Is," "The God Who Stays," "Truth Be Told," "Don't Stop Praying," and "Good." He also released the album "My Story Your Glory."
In 2007, he underwent vocal-cord surgery, which required a period of vocal rest.
