Alan Jackson - How Great Thou Art

Chorus / Description : O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made;
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

How Great Thou Art Lyrics

O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made;
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

When through the woods, and forest glades I wander,
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees.
When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur
And see the brook, and feel the gentle breeze.

And when I think, that God, His Son not sparing;
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin.

When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation,
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart.
Then I shall bow, in humble adoration,
And then proclaim: "My God, how great Thou art!"

How Great Thou Art Hymn Story with Lyrics - Story Behind the Hymn - Carl Boberg

In 1886 a Swedish minister named Carl Boberg inspired by the grandeur of a thunderstorm on the rugged coastline wrote a poem beginning with the words Oh store Gud or Almighty God. It was said to an old Swedish melody then in 1907 the text was translated into German, later in 1912 a Russian clergyman I.S. prokhanov produced a translation which finally led in 1925 to a clergyman in Chicago who translated the Russian text into English. But this version which began "Oh mighty God when I behold the wonder," never achieved broad popularity. Stuart Hine a British missionary in Russia in 1923 heard the Russian rendition of the hymn and was deeply moved. He decided to write an English version, adding his own thoughts and weaving into the text deep expressions of worship for the breathtaking scenery and the many conversions to Christ he had witnessed in his travels. He ended up with three verses but this English version of the hymn much like the later 1925 version remained largely undiscovered.

Years passed during World War two Reverend and mrs. Ann returned to England and immediately following the war they observed the plight of refugees trying to return home. Thousands had fled to Britain from Eastern Europe during the Nazi invasion and now were homesick wanting to return to their native lands. Prompted by this, Hine wrote a fourth first to the hymn that he translated years before
"when Christ shall come
with shout of acclamation
and take me home
what joy shall fill my heart...

In 1949 the completed hymn was printed inspired by the wonders of creation, the joys of salvation and the horrors of war it had evolved over 70 years from the kins of many authors moving through four languages Swedish, German, Russian and English. but still it was seldom sung.

Fall in London during the 1954, Billy Graham crusade there George Beverly Shea was given a small four-page leaflet containing this hymn in both Russian and English he played and sang it for himself, then shared it with other members of the Graham team. A year later he tried it out in Toronto and the response inspired him.
Finally three years from the time that he was first introduced to it, he premiered it fully at the great New York crusade of 1957 there George Beverly Shea sang this treasured him, 93 times with the choir joining the course with these powerful words

Then sings my soul my Savior God to thee
How Great Thou art How Great...
