Nothing But The Blood - The Story Behind The Song - Austin Stone Worship

Justin Cofield with
Austin stone worship and we're gonna
talk a little bit about the song nothing
about the blood. That's on the new album
king of love. So great old hymn and Aaron
I gonna share a little bit about
the author and the history and I'm gonna
share a little bit about the lyrics to
the song.

Austin stone worship: I remember singing this song
growing up in church and you know how it
is like when you're a kid you're singing
songs you're not making a connection
between lyrics and what you're actually
saying. This has been a song that we
have loved here recently at the stone. So
as I got to a look at this guy's story.
The guy that wrote this hymn there was a
few things that popped out that I
thought were pretty pretty interesting.
It was written by a guy named Robert
Lowry in the late 1870s. He was
passionate about the gospel, he was
passionate about preaching but one of
the ways that he preached was through
writing songs. Robert
Lowry wrote over 500 hymns and
when I was looking at the list of hymns,
I mean obviously there was a lot that a
lot of them that I had never heard.
1865 Happy Voices
1868 Gospel Melodies
1868 Chapel Melodies (with Silas Vail) Biglow & Main
1869 Bright Jewels Biglow & Main
1871 Pure Gold (with W. H. Doane) Biglow & Main
1871, 1872, 1873 Hymn Service
1873 Royal Diadem (with W. H. Doane) Biglow & Main
1873 Temple Anthems
1874 Tidal Wave
1875 Brightest and Best (with W. H. Doane) Biglow & Main
1877 Gospel Music Biglow & Main
1877 Welcome Tidings (with W. H. Doane and Ira D. Sankey) Biglow & Main
1878 Chautauqua Carols
1879 Gospel Hymn and Tune Book (with W. H. Doane)
1879 Hymn Service for the Sunday School (with W. H. Doane and others) Biglow & Main
1880 Good as Gold (with W. H. Doane) Biglow & Main
1880 Hymn Service No.2 (with W. H. Doane and John Vincent) Biglow & Main
1881–1886 Cantatas for Christmas
1882 Our Glad Hosanna (with W. H. Doane) Biglow & Main
1882–1887 Cantatas for Easter
1884 Joyful Lays (with W. H. Doane) Biglow & Main
1886 The Glad Refrain (with W. H. Doane) Biglow & Main
1889 Select Gems (with W. H. Doane) American Baptist Publication Society
1889 The Bright Array (with W. H. Doane)
1898 Royal Hymnal (with Ira D. Sankey) Biglow & Main.
I mean several of them were songs that we
sing songs that are in hymnals and
despite his success you know as a as a
songwriter, he talks about towards the
end of his life how he was frustrated
that he had success as a songwriter but
not really the thing that he was most
passionate about. He was preaching
and he wrote this towards the end of his
life he said "music with me has always
been a side issue, I would much rather be
known as a preacher who preaches a
gospel sermon to an appreciative
audience than ever write to him. I've
always looked at myself as a preacher
and feel a sort of depreciation when I
began to be known as a composer instead
of a preacher" He felt like this kind
of frustration right that he was
preaching through songs but no one ever
realized that he was actually a preacher.
I meant what else it's away from
that was songwriters for the church have
to be preachers. I mean some of
the best songs that have come from these
older theologians were the ones that
were written
by preachers.
Hymn and made me really think about songs that I'm writing in
your writing we're writing as a
community here are we viewing it through
the lens of we are preaching the gospel.
We are preaching theology, we are
teaching and instructing the truths of
God the gospel of Jesus. Are we are we
really keeping that at the forefront of
our mind? when we're writing songs. I
think that's one of the reasons why he
was so effective as a song writers. cuz
he beat himself that's a preacher.

It's just evidence that that when we
surrender to the Lord our gifts and
talents he uses them in ways that we you
never even met and imagine. We may
not even be comfortable with or may not
even really enjoy but he still use them
uses them for his glory and here we are
singing this song 125 years later and
It's being used to glorify Him and to
draw people to the throne.
