Song Meaning

Grief sits at the center here: a chair that stays empty, a goodbye that heaven's promise does not make easier. The singer lists what he knows ("the sun rises," "You're still good") and admits that knowing "doesn't stop me from crying." Rather than fake strength, he brings God "the anger, the hurt, and the why."

The refrain "I don't understand, but I trust You" changes meaning as the song moves. Early on it is a last resort. By the bridge it is a string of short answers, "Still hurting / I trust You / Still asking," and in the final chorus trusting is redefined as "still reaching for Your hand" without requiring explanation. A plain request, "meet me here, God, right here on the floor," carries the middle section.

The long outro looks ahead to a day with "no more tears" and "no more graves," close to Revelation 21:4, and then admits "I just wish it was today." It closes on the line that faith can feel like doubt, and that saying God's name through pain is itself a choice.

[Verse]
I don't understand why
You took them away
Why yesterday had laughter and silence
Has today
Why love gets so deep
Just to hurt this much
Why I still reach out for a hand
I cannot touch

[Verse]
I got questions on questions
They circle my brain
Trying to make sense of impossible pain
People tell me have faith
God knows what He'll do
But faith gets hard when the chair stays empty in the room

[Chorus]
I know the sun rises
I know You're still good
I know all the verses that say that I should
But knowing the words doesn't stop me from crying
Knowing there's heaven doesn't make this goodbye easy
So I won't fake strength
I won't pretend I'm fine
I'll bring You the anger, the hurt, and the why
When I've got nothing but one thing left to do
I don't understand, but I trust You

[Chorus]
I don't understand, but I trust You
I don't understand, but I trust You
And the flowers fade
When the daylight disappears
When I'm standing in the silence with a thousand unanswered tears
I don't understand, but I trust You

[Bridge]
I trust You
I trust You
Still hurting
I trust You
Still asking
I trust You
I don't understand, but I trust You

[Verse]
Sometimes I'm alone
Even surrounded by friends
Everybody goes home
But the grieving never ends
Sometimes I want to hide
Find a place nobody knows
Somewhere the pain can't follow
Somewhere the memory won't go
But there ain't no hiding from a heart that loved deep
There ain't no shortcut through a loss You have to keep
So meet me here, God
Right here on the floor
I'm not asking for religion
I just need You more

[Chorus]
I need You in the nighttime
I need You when I break
Need You when another memory is more than I can take
Need You when I'm angry
Need You when I doubt
Need You when the prayer just won't come out
And maybe trusting You
Doesn't mean I understand
Maybe trusting You means I'm still reaching for Your hand
I don't understand, but I trust You

[Chorus]
I don't know the reason
I don't know the plan
But even in the darkness
I'm still reaching
For Your hand
I don't understand, but I trust You

[Bridge]
Through the sorrow
I trust You
Through the tomorrow
I trust You
Even when I wish that yesterday could start anew
I don't understand, but I trust You

[Outro]
You said a day is coming when everything will be new
No more thirst
No more tears
No more fear
No more years cut short
No more hospital rooms
No more graves
No more final breaths
No more names carved into stone
A day where love doesn't have to say goodbye
A day where nobody asks why
And God, I believe that day is coming
I just wish it was today
So when I cannot see it
I trust You
And I cannot feel it
I trust You
When my heart keeps asking why
I trust You
When the sun goes down
I trust You
When the tears come out
I trust You
Because I have this faith
And faith feels like doubt
I trust You
I trust You
I trust You
I trust You
Maybe I'll never know why this happened this way
Maybe some answers won't come in my days
But I know there's a promise bigger than the grave
A God who remembers every soul that He made
So I'll carry the love
I'll carry their name
I'll carry the memories through joy and through pain
And when missing them hits me like it's all brand new
I'll cry if I need to
And still trust You
Because grief and belief can live in one heart
Faith doesn't mean that the pain doesn't hurt
Faith is saying Your name when my whole world is bruised
Faith is whispering, "God, I still choose You"
