Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus

Shane & Shane sing “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus,” the hymn Helen Howarth Lemmel wrote in 1922 after reading a tract that spoke of looking to Christ. The first verse asks, “O soul, are you weary and troubled? No light in the darkness you see?” The answer is “There's light for a look at the Savior, and life more abundant and free.”

The second verse sets out the promise: “Through death into life everlasting He passed, and we follow Him there. O'er us sin no more hath dominion, for more than conquerors we are.” The chorus is the well-known invitation, “Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.” The third verse says, “His word shall not fail you, He promised, believe Him and all will be well,” and sends the singer out “to a world that is dying” to tell of salvation. This version closes with a stanza of “Amazing Grace.”

Fixing our eyes on Jesus is Hebrews 12:2. More than conquerors is Romans 8:37, and abundant life is John 10:10.
