Song Meaning
Sue Dodge sings “There Shall Be Showers of Blessing,” a hymn by Daniel Whittle with music by James McGranahan. It was written in the late nineteenth century and was widely used at revival meetings. The first verse takes its promise from a God who sends refreshment: “There shall be showers of blessing, this is the promise of love, there shall be seasons refreshing, sent from the Savior above.”
The refrain makes the request personal. “Showers of blessing, showers of blessing we need, mercy drops round us are falling, but for the showers we plead.” The second verse imagines rain over “the hills and the valleys,” a “sound of abundance of rain,” and the third asks God to “send them upon us” and to honor his Word. The final lines tie the blessing to obedience: “If we but trust and obey, if we let God have His way.”
The promise of showers of blessing is Ezekiel 34:26. Plentiful rain refreshing the land is Psalm 68:9, and God pouring out blessing in response to faithful giving is Malachi 3:10.

This is the promise of love,
There shall be seasons refreshing,
Sent from the Savior above.
Showers of blessing,
Showers of blessing we need,
Mercy drops round us are falling,
But for the showers we plead.
There shall be showers of blessing,
Precious reviving again,
Over the hills and the valleys,
Sound of abundance of rain.
Showers of blessing,
Showers of blessing we need,
Mercy drops round us are falling,
But for the showers we plead.
There shall be showers of blessing;
Send them upon us, O Lord;
Grant to us now a refreshing,
Come, and now honor Thy Word.
Showers of blessing,
Showers of blessing we need,
Mercy drops round us are falling,
But for the showers we plead.
There shall be showers of blessing:
Oh, that today they might fall,
Now as to God we’re confessing,
Now as on Jesus we call!
Showers of blessing,
Showers of blessing we need,
Mercy drops round us are falling,
But for the showers we plead.
There shall be showers of blessing,
If we but trust and obey;
There shall be seasons refreshing,
If we let God have His way.
Showers of blessing,
Showers of blessing we need,
Mercy drops round us are falling,
But for the showers we plead.
