Just Because It's Christmas
Song Meaning
Anne Wilson opens by refusing the cheeriest assumption of the season: "just because it's Christmas doesn't mean your heart don't hurt... joy to all the world can be the hardest time of year." It's an unusual thing for a Christmas song to say out loud, but the honesty is the point — grief doesn't pause for the calendar.
The hook doesn't try to fix that grief so much as relocate it: "bring your wounded heart to the manger, fall down at the feet of the king... you don't have to be okay just because it's Christmas." Matthew 11:28's invitation — "come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" — carries the same logic: come as you are, not once you've sorted yourself out first.
The second verse names the promise more specifically: "he's healing for the broken, and he's home for all the lost... so you don't have to hide your questions deep within your soul." Isaiah 61:1 describes exactly that mission — sent "to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives" — which the song locates not in some future healing but right at the manger, alongside the baby the season is actually about.
Just because it's Christmas
Doesn't mean your heart don't hurt
Just because it's Christmas
Doesn't mean there's peace on earth
Joy to all the world
Can be the hardest time of year
But see the star
Even here
Bring your wounded heart to the manger
Fall down at the feet of the king
When thrills of hope don't find you
He loves you just the same
You don't have to be ok
Just because it's Christmas
He's healing for the broken
And he's home for all the lost
He's comfort for the weary
Sent from heaven just for us
So you don't have to hide
Your questions deep within your soul
Emmanuel
Already knows
Bring your wounded heart to the manger
Fall down at the feet of the king
When thrills of hope don't find you
He loves you just the same
You don't have to be ok
Just because it's Christmas
O come and adore him
O come and adore him
Feel the wonder once again
O come and adore him
Bring your wounded heart to the manger
Fall down at the feet of the king
When thrills of hope don't find you
He loves you just the same
You don't have to be ok
You don't have to be ok
Just because it's Christmas
