Hymns Mash-Up: How Great Thou Art / It Is Well / Holy, Holy, Holy / Great Is Thy Faithfulness
Song Meaning
Anthem Lights weave four separate hymns into one continuous piece, and the transitions between them work because each one is reaching for the same kind of scale from a different angle — 'How Great Thou Art' through creation ('I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder'), 'It Is Well' through personal peace, 'Holy, Holy, Holy' through direct address to God's character, 'Great Is Thy Faithfulness' through God's consistency over time.
'Great is Thy faithfulness... there is no shadow of turning with Thee' echoes Lamentations 3:23's claim that God's mercies 'are new every morning,' and 'holy, holy, holy, Lord, God Almighty' lifts Revelation 4:8's declaration from the four living creatures nearly word for word. The mash-up's brief snippets of each hymn — a verse here, a chorus there — never let any single one finish its full argument, but the effect isn't dilution; hearing four different centuries of hymn-writers reach for the same conclusions back to back makes each one's claim feel less like an isolated tradition and more like one continuous chorus.
Oh Lord My God When I, in awesome wonder,
consider all the worlds thy hands have made,
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
thy power throughout the universe display.
Then sings my soul, it is well with my soul (with my soul),
it is well, it is well with my soul, my Savior, God to thee,
how great thou art, how great.
Great is thy faithfulness, oh God my father.
There is no shadow of turning with thee.
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided.
Great is thy faithfulness oh Lord.
Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God almighty.
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty.
God in three persons, blessed trinity.
How great, it is well!
