Reckless Love / How He Loves Us
Song Meaning
Anthem Lights splice two of contemporary worship's most recognizable songs into one medley, and the pairing works because both songs argue close to the same point from different angles. Cory Asbury's "leaves the 99" line pulls directly from the parable in Luke 15:4 — a shepherd with a hundred sheep who "leaves the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and goes after the one that is lost, until he finds it."
John Mark McMillan's half of the medley, "love's like a hurricane, I am a tree bending beneath the weight of His wind and mercy," reaches for the same territory Romans 5:8 covers more plainly: "God commends his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Both songs resist the idea that love has to be earned first — the shepherd goes looking before the sheep does anything to deserve it, and the storm image describes something overwhelming the singer rather than something worked toward.
Before I spoke a word
You were singin' over me
You've been so, so good to me
Before I took a breath
You breathe Your life in me
You've been so, so kind to me
Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending
Reckless love of God
Oh, it chases me down
Fights till I'm found
Leaves the 99
I couldn't earn it
I don't deserve it
Still, You give yourself away
Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending
Reckless love of God
He is jealous for me
Love's like a hurricane, I am a tree
Bending beneath the weight of His wind and mercy
When all of a sudden
I am unaware of these afflictions
Eclipsed by glory
And I realize just how beautiful You are
And how great Your affections are for me
And, oh
How He loves us so
Oh, how He loves us
How He loves us so
Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending
Reckless love of God
Oh, it chases me down
Fights till I'm found
Leaves the 99
I couldn't earn it
I don't deserve it
Still, You give Yourself away
Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending
Reckless love of God
There's no shadow You won't light up
Mountain You won't climb up
Comin' after me
There's no wall You won't kick down
Lie You won't tear down
Comin' after me
There's no shadow You won't light up
Mountain You won't climb up
Comin' after me
There's no wall You won't kick down
Lie You won't tear down
Comin' after me
He loves us oh
How He loves us oh
How He loves us oh
How He loves
He loves us
It's overwhelming
He loves us
It's never ending
He loves us
Oh, the reckless love of God
