"Underground is where life begins" is Kristene DiMarco's rewrite of John 12:24 — a seed has to be buried and die before it becomes anything else — set inside a verse about the ordinary discipline of an unseen morning, "in the quiet of the morning, when no one knows and no one needs to know." The song locates resurrection logic in private, unglamorous soil before it ever gets to the loud bridge.

"Beyond the burial there's a resurrection" tracks 1 Corinthians 15:42's picture of a body sown in one state and raised in another — what goes into the ground perishable comes up different. "Let my roots go deep" and "I will rise" aren't opposite instructions; DiMarco writes them as the same motion, since nothing rises that hasn't first gone under.
