CityAlight takes its title straight from Paul's own words to the Corinthians — "your labor is not in vain in the Lord" — and builds the whole song as a kind of personal restatement of that promise. "The tasks that You have set for me, I may not understand, yet I will follow where you lead" isn't resignation; it's the specific shape obedience takes when the reasons aren't visible yet.

The second verse narrows from general obedience to a particular calling: "give me feet to seek the lost, just as You searched for me." That line does something quietly important — it makes evangelism an echo of something already done to the singer, not a duty invented from nothing. The chorus keeps returning to scale on purpose: "be it great or small" refuses to rank the work by how visible it is.

The final verse looks past the labor itself to what's waiting on the other side of it: "soon you will be home at rest, your work, complete in Him." That's the quiet argument underneath the repeated refrain — the promise isn't that the work will feel worth it now, but that it doesn't ultimately depend on feeling that way.
