Going Home

Song Meaning

Written as a farewell spoken from the edge of eternity, this song lets the dying believer do the comforting. The opening lines set the frame — a race finished, an earthly sun going down — and the singer asks friends not to grieve at the graveside, since the tomb is not the last word. The chorus makes the central claim plain: the body may lie beneath broken ground, but the soul will be absent when heaven calls it upward to a crown. Verse three anchors that confidence in the cross and the empty tomb, and the repeated line about being saved by nail-scarred hands carries the refrain home. Later verses turn honest about the road itself — rough, with long nights, pain, tears, doubts and fears — before insisting that every storm will pass when the Savior stands near. The bridge reaches for John 3:16 and the gates of pearl, picturing angels around the throne and the Lamb as guide. The closing lines are a plain goodbye for now, with a hope that friends will meet again around God's throne.

[Verse 1]
Goodbye my friend, my race is run
The setting of my earthly sun
Don't weep for me when I am gone
My Savior called and I'm moving on

[Verse 2]
You may stand beside my grave
Thinking death has won the day
But listen close, hear what I say
Jesus Christ has made a way

[Chorus]
This old body may lie down
Beneath the dirt and broken ground
But my soul will not be found
Among the dead when heaven sounds
Calls me upward to my crown

[Verse 3]
I have trusted in the Lord
Believed His everlasting word
The cross was where my debt was paid
The empty tomb is why I'm saved
So I'm going home
I'm on my way to the promised land
Because I'm saved by the nail-scarred hands

[Chorus]
I'll be standing there, singing praise
To the King of Glory through endless days
I pray you'll make it, I pray you won't stray
Keep your eyes on Jesus, don't wander away
Because I'm going home
And there I'm going to stay

[Verse 4]
This world is filled with pain and tears
Heartaches, troubles, doubts and fears
But every storm will disappear
When I see my Savior standing near
He rescued me from sin and shame
Called me by my very name
Nothing in this world could ever be
Greater than His grace on me

[Verse 5]
The road was rough, the nights were long
Yet He was faithful all along
When I was weak, He made me strong
Now heaven is my final song
The battle's fought, the victory won
I hear Him say, "My child, come home"
No more sorrow, no more pain
No more loss and no more rain
So I'm going home

[Chorus]
I'm on my way to the promised land
Because I'm saved by the nail-scarred hands
I'll be standing there, singing praise
To the King of Glory through endless days
I pray you'll make it, I pray you won't stray
Keep your eyes on Jesus, don't wander away
Because I'm going home
And there I'm going to stay

[Bridge]
For God so loved this fallen world
He gave His one and only Son
Whoever believes will never die
But live forever in the sky
The gates of pearl will open wide
The Lamb of God will be my guide
The angels sing around the throne
And soon I'll join that heavenly song

[Outro]
No tears will fall, no night will come
No fear remains, the war is won
Forevermore I'll testify
Jesus lives and so will I
Yes, I'm going home
I'm on my way to the promised land
Because I'm saved by the nail-scarred hands
I'll be standing there, singing praise
To the King of Glory through endless days
I pray you'll make it, I pray you won't stray
Keep your eyes on Jesus, don't wander away
Because I'm going home
And there I'm going to stay

[Outro]
So goodbye for now, my friend
This is not where life will end
If you trust the risen Son
Then one day we will meet again
Around God's throne we'll sing His praise
Forever and forever our song will raise
I'm leaving now, but hear me say
I'm going home
And there I'm going to stay
