Hero and The Villain

Dan Bremnes names both sides of an internal conflict without picking one to root for in "Hero and The Villain" — "I'm tryna love myself, but there's a war inside of me, I wanna cry for help, but I'm my own worst enemy." The struggle is described as genuinely divided, not one true self fighting off a foreign intruder.

"All of my ghosts come out, they pin me to the ground, just try to stay alive for the morning light" keeps the danger nighttime-specific rather than constant, and "livin' in my head is an assembly line of worry and regret" gives the repetition a mechanical, exhausting quality rather than dramatic crisis.

"Of all the seasons and the reruns, storylines I just repeat them, oh there's gotta be a better way" closes the song on a request for change rather than a resolution already found — the hero and the villain are both still named as present, still living inside the same person by the song's final line.
