David Dunn spends most of "Underneath Your Skin" describing the exact mechanics of a life built on being watched — "everybody stares anytime you go anywhere... all the pretension, all this attention goes to your head." The song's sharpest question isn't about vanity in general but about durability: "you leave the lights off, will they still know? I don't think so" — testing whether the admiration survives once the performance stops.
