Song Meaning
Easter morning is retold almost word for word from Matthew’s Gospel. The piece starts with Jesus’s own promise, “Destroy this temple and in three days, I will raise it up,” then moves to Mary Magdalene and the other Mary arriving at the tomb early on Sunday. Repetition marks the scene: a great earthquake, the angel of the Lord descending from heaven, and the stone rolled back again and again, “And rolled, rolled / And rolled, / Back the stone.”
The angel’s appearance is “like lightening” with a robe “white as snow,” and the keepers shake until they look like “dead men.” Then comes the message the song repeats: “Fear not,” you seek Jesus who was crucified, “He is not here / For He has risen as he said.” The listener is invited in: “Come / See the place where the Lord lay.”
The ending recalls what Jesus said in Galilee, “I’ll rise, I’ll rise, Again,” and releases into “Alleluia” and “Amen.” Matthew 28:2 and 28:6 give the scene, and John 2:19 supplies the opening promise.
