Sinner Saved BY Grace

The Gaither Vocal Band's “Sinner Saved By Grace” is a first-person testimony. It opens by inviting the listener to “go with me back to where I started from,” and then names what changed: “a miracle of love that took me in its sweet embrace and made me what I am today, just an old sinner saved by grace.” The self-description is modest on purpose, and the last word of the chorus gives the credit away.

The verse is more specific about the exchange. “When I stood condemned to death, He took my place.” Now he lives “and breathe[s] in freedom” with every breath, “loved and forgiven.” The bridge turns that gratitude into humility: “How could I boast on anything I've ever seen or done? How could I dare to claim as mine the victories God has won?” The closing question, “Where would I be had God not brought me gently to this place,” leaves the singer nothing to take credit for.

Salvation as a gift and not an achievement is Ephesians 2:8-9. Christ taking the sinner's place is Romans 5:8, and the line about not boasting echoes 1 Corinthians 15:10, “by the grace of God I am what I am.”
