Oceans (Where My Feet may Fail)

Song Meaning

Matt Crocker, Joel Houston, and Salomon Ligthelm built "Oceans" on a single image rather than a chorus of ideas: Peter's moment of stepping out of the boat, reworked as an invitation rather than a warning. "You call me out upon the waters, the great unknown where feet may fail" names the risk directly instead of minimizing it — the song never promises the water will be calm, only that God is present in it. "Your grace abounds in deepest waters" and "where feet may fail and fear surrounds me, You've never failed and You won't start now" both locate confidence in God's track record rather than in the absence of danger. The bridge changes verbs from calling to leading — "Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders... take me deeper than my feet could ever wander" — turning the song from a response to a request, asking to be led further into the same uncertain water rather than out of it. That's the song's central claim, easy to miss under the repetition: faith here isn't rescued from the ocean, it's made stronger by staying in it, "in the presence of my Saviour," which is the only reason walking on water is worth attempting at all.

You call me out upon the waters
The great unknown where feet may fail
And there I find You in the mystery
In oceans deep
My faith will stand

And I will call upon Your name
And keep my eyes above the waves
When oceans rise
My soul will rest in Your embrace
For I am Yours and You are mine

Your grace abounds in deepest waters
Your sovereign hand
Will be my guide
Where feet may fail and fear surrounds me
You've never failed and You won't start now

So I will call upon Your name
And keep my eyes above the waves
When oceans rise
My soul will rest in Your embrace
For I am Yours and You are mine

Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders
Let me walk upon the waters
Wherever You would call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my Saviour

Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders
Let me walk upon the waters
Wherever You would call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my Saviour

I will call upon Your Name
Keep my eyes above the waves
My soul will rest in Your embrace
I am Yours and You are mine
