JJ Heller sings Civilla Martin's hymn in its shortest common form, opening with three questions rather than a statement: "why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come, why should my heart be lonely and long for heaven and home?"

"When Jesus is my portion, a constant friend is He" answers those questions before the title phrase even arrives, and "His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me" borrows Jesus' own teaching that not one sparrow falls without the Father's knowledge, applied here as personal comfort rather than abstract theology.

"I sing because I'm happy, I sing because I'm free" repeats as the hymn's actual conclusion — not a reasoned argument against discouragement, just the plain fact of what singing does once the questions have been answered.
