Jonny Diaz treats surrender as the actual mechanism of freedom rather than its opposite in "Upside Down" — "the only time I've been free is chained to You as You lead, learning how victory starts with surrendering." The paradox is stated plainly, without softening how strange the claim sounds.

"Losing my life is the only way it can be found" repeats as the song's central inversion, and "having faith in what's unseen, loving my enemies" lists specific, difficult practices rather than a general posture of trust. "I've been given what I haven't earned, 'cause You took the cross I deserve" names the actual exchange underneath the whole song's logic.

"Where last is first, and lost are finally found" closes the list of reversals without resolving the strangeness into something more comfortable — the song ends still calling its own claims "upside down," not asking the listener to stop noticing how backward they sound.
