Can Anybody Hear Me

Meredith Andrews' “Can Anybody Hear Me” is an honest prayer from a dry season. The first lines set the scene: “I'm staring at these empty walls, wondering when You'll visit me again.” She asks God to show her if anything is coming between them, because she is barely hanging on.

The chorus keeps the tension in view. “Can anybody hear me? The silence is deafening. Why do You feel so far away, when I know You're here with me, but I just need the faith to see.” She then states what she holds to: nothing can separate her from God's love. The second verse admits that believing what she cannot see has never come naturally, and that she has questions, yet she is certain of a love strong enough to hold her while she doubts. The bridge turns the complaint into trust, saying God will never let go of her hand, and that she will keep hold of his promises even when she can't find him. The ending repeats that he can hear her despite the silence. Because it doesn't pretend that faith is always felt, the song gives permission to pray while confused. It can bring comfort to anyone who has lost the sense of God's nearness and wants words for saying so.
