Nathaniel Bassey frames "Book Of Life" as a story about someone else before it becomes a question for the listener — a brother who falls asleep and wakes in the afterlife, disoriented, wandering into a room to find an angel and a ledger. "Only those whose name I find written in this book of life will forever be in paradise" states the stakes plainly, borrowed directly from Revelation's own courtroom imagery.

The brother's defense is deliberately familiar and deliberately insufficient — "I'm a pillar in my local church, give the offerings and the tithes, feed the poor and have myself a good name" — a list of religious activity offered as evidence, which the song pointedly doesn't accept as automatically sufficient. "Unforgiveness lurks within your heart, some folks that you will never let go" names the specific hidden obstacle, not a vague shortfall.

"Little foxes and secret faults will spring surprises on that final day" borrows the Song of Solomon's image of small, overlooked things doing real damage. "Let him who thinks that he stands take heed lest he falls" turns the narrative outward at the very end, converting one brother's story into a direct warning repeated as a question rather than resolved as an answer.
