Song Meaning

Nathaniel Bassey's “Strong Tower” is a worship song built on the power of the name of Jesus. It opens with the title line, “Your name is a strong tower, Jesus, to You belong all power.” The promise follows, “Whenever I call Your name, You always come and make a way.” The second section turns to prayer, noting that when believers pray in his name, “every knee must bow.”

The middle of the song is a call-and-response in which Bassey names Jesus at the start of each line and the room answers. He lists places where the name is needed, such as “in the midnight hour,” “in the raging storm” and “through the troubled waters,” then describes him as “my shield and buckler” and “my horn of power.” The closing lines use bolder Nigerian-style titles, saying the name is “a bulldozer” and “a game changer,” while still returning to “a strong tower.”

The name as a strong tower is Proverbs 18:10. Every knee bowing is Philippians 2:10, and making a way is Isaiah 43:19.

Your name is a strong tower Jesus
To you belong all power Jesus
Whenever I call your name
You always come and make a way
Your name is a strong tower Jesus

Your name is a strong tower Jesus
To you belong all power Jesus
Whenever I call your name
You always come and make a way
Your name is a strong tower Jesus

When we pray in the name of Jesus
Every knee, every knee must bow
When we pray in the name of Jesus
Every knee, every knee must bow

When we pray in the name of Jesus
Every knee, every knee must bow
When we pray in the name of Jesus
Every knee, every knee must bow

Your name is a strong tower Jesus
To you belong all power Jesus
Whenever I call your name
You always come and make a way
Your name is a strong tower Jesus

Your name is a strong tower Jesus
To you belong all power Jesus
Whenever I call your name
You always come and make a way
Your name is a strong tower Jesus

When we call on the name of Jesus
You will come and make a way
When we call on the name of Jesus
You will come and make a way

Your name is a waymaker Jesus
To you belong all power Jesus
Whenever I call your name
You make a way
Your name is a waymaker Jesus

Your name is a waymaker Jesus
To you belong all power Jesus
Whenever I call your name
You make a way
Your name is a waymaker Jesus

Jesus! In the midnight hour
Jesus! In the raging storm
Jesus! through the troubled waters
Jesus! I know who to call
Whenever I call your name you make a way
Your name is a waymaker Jesus

Call the name now
Jesus! You're my shield and buckler
Jesus! That is who you are
Jesus! You're my horn of power
Jesus! You're the great I am

Call your name
When I call your name
You make a way
Your name is a waymaker Jesus
Your name is a strong tower Jesus
To you belong all power Jesus
Whenever I call your name
You make a way
Your name is a strong tower Jesus

Your name is a strong tower Jesus
To you belong all power Jesus
Whenever I call your name, you make a way
Your name is a strong tower Jesus

Jesus! Your name is a bulldozer
Jesus! to you belong all power
Whenever I call your name
You make a way
Your name is a strong tower Jesus

Jesus! Your name is a game changer
Jesus! and to you belong all power
Whenever I call your name
You make a way
Your name is a strong tower Jesus
